Established in 1965 by exiled Tibetan monks who had fled to India from the Mindrolling Monastery in Tibet, this monastery is today one of the largest Buddhist centres in India. It is situated a little outside of main Dehradun city, in the quiet green surroundings of Clement Town. The monastery buildings spread out around beautifully landscaped gardens, with some of the areas being open to tourists. These basically consist of two separate park-like areas: 1. The Giant Buddha Statue: This huge gilded statue stands tall in a garden, with a path leading all round it. The path is lined with rows of prayer wheels which you can rotate (always only in a clockwise direction) to enable prayers to rise upward. There are larger prayer wheels in pavilions, and beautiful flowering shrubs around. 2. The Giant Stupa: This is the larger of the two parks, and consists not just of a gigantic stupa (built between 2000 and 2002), but also several other structures, including a huge gilded statue of Guru Padmasambhav; eight stupas made in eight different styles; various pavilions housing prayer wheels; and a statue of Yangchenma (Saraswati). Each of these is explained in highly detailed signboards at the entrance. A beautiful statue of a ‘White Tara’ stands at one end of the park, commemorating a member of the community at Mindrolling. No entry fee is charged.
