Mukhwa is a small village up on the mountains in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is situated just opposite to Dharali, a small town on the left bank of Bhagirathi river and can be approached by crossing the river on a Jhula (suspension bridge). However, it is better to go to Mukhwa from Harshil, a famous tourist place about 5 km downstream. From Harshil a motorable road goes to Mukhwa by crossing Bhagirathi along a good bridge. At Mukhwa village there is a temple dedicated to goddess Ganga. The temple is popularly known as Mukhimath. It is here that a replica of goddess Ganga is brought from the Ganga temple of Gangotri Dham on the Yama Dwitia day (one day after the day of Kali Puja) and kept and worshipped during the winter, when Gangotri becomes inaccessible due to severe snowfall. The replica is returned to Gangotri in the month of Baisakh (usually in early May). The Mukhimath temple houses a beautiful Murti of goddess Ganga and Puja is offered here throughout the year. The temple complex at Mukhwa consists of the main Ganga temple (which is a 5 pinnacled white structure) and a beautiful wooden structure just beside the main temple.
