Madan Gopal Temple – Bishnupur Located in the west of the temple town of Bishnupur in a busy market area between Kalindi Bandh and Jamuna Bandh, the south-facing Madan Gopal temple is one of the few monuments in the town that is still a living temple. I’m always a little sensitive towards pointing my camera in the direction of devotees, so as a result I didn’t take my images here. This area is known as Madhab Ganga, and is famous for the Rathajatra festival.
Madan Gopal – Bishnupur The laterite Pancharatna temple, with an octagonal central pinnacle and four square corner pinnacles, was constructed in 1665 CE by Queen Shiromani (alias Churamani Devi), wife of the Malla King Bir Singha II. Bir Singha II reigned from 1656 to 1682 CE, and by all accounts he was a very cruel king. He confiscated rent-free lands and treasures enjoyed by the members of the Raj family, and put some of them into prison. Madhab Singha, his younger brother, protested against such unjust and cruel acts, and was poisoned as a result. He also ordered two of his sons to be murdered, and would punish criminals by having them walled up alive.
Madan Gopal Temple – Bishnupur Towards the end of his life, Bir Singha II discovered that his eldest son, Durjan Singha, had not been murdered as per his orders, but had been concealed from the king. It is said the king was beside himself with joy, and immediately crowned Durjan Singha King.
Minimal decoration on the facade of Madan Gopal Temple – Bishnupur Although Bir Singha II was cruel, he was responsible for a number of temples that still stand today in Bishnupur, as well as constructing a number of gates surrounding the ancient town. He also had several big lakes and tanks created, such as Lalbandh, Krishnabandh, Gantatbandh, Jamunabandh, Kalindibandh, Shyambandh, and Pokabandh.
