Excellent hotel and restaurant in the hotels zone of Bishnupur. If you're taking a room in the hotel or nearby in Jalsa, Laxmi, or other lodges (which are good considering the place), we recommend that you dine here.
We only got to try them twice and both times they did not fail to impress. The ambiance is what you'd expect in an old eatery in the suburbs; somewhat shabby with garish colors and peeling paint and old blackened real wood furniture. Actually that noir vibe does apply to a certain section of the demographic, there are some old paise hotels and cabins with the same ambiance featured heavily on reels.
Anyway, everything is quite clean and there's no smelliness despite the kitchen beside.
The food is excellent, and I daresay they can compete with the likes Ballygunge place or Kosha. True, this restaurant doesn't offer anything nearly so spicy and majestic. And maybe that's why we liked them so much - clean, simple cooking that caresses the taste buds, giving you the natural taste of the main ingredient instead of completely smothering it under spices. However, the rice may have been better. But I guess that's okay at the relatively cheap price, considering it's a tourist city in season.
Also we loved the shaal leaves plates! It's an unique thing in Rahr bongo. Standard traditional bengali banana leaf doesn't come close (sorry Kolkatans), because these leaves bring their own smokey, junglee flavor that mixes with the food and give you that intensely in-nature's-lap experience. Indeed, we felt more like eating in some homestay in Mukutmanipur than in the heart of the Temple City. The utensils were simple but clean as well.
The staff is polite and unobtrusive, and the manager gives quite a good vibe. He doesn't have that sugary politeness that you can instantly spot as fake; instead they felt warm, dependable, and know-what-they-do.
We recommend this place for lunch and dinner. Some special dishes you may have to order beforehand; but if you're not too picky with your items you will find a fine rahr bengali eating here.
Note: this is panchforon area, so kalojire lovers may find the veg items and fish jhol awkward. But it was...
Read moreI went on a brief visit to Bishnupur to enjoy the unique terracotta temples again and to see the oldest Durga. Right out of the station, I booked a Toto. The young boy, during the middle of my tour urged me to take a break for my lunch. He took me to Monalisa. On such trips, I always take veg meals. Previously I took my veg lunch in Medinipur (2nd best), Chandrakona road (good), Garhbeta (passable), Goaltore (good), Purulia (good), Salt Lake BD market Kolkata (good). Standard cost of a veg meal in all places is Rs.50 and creates no stomach trouble whatsoever. With Monalisa, I was surprised by the tastiness, the speed of serving, the variety in the menu and also by the aged gentleman at the counter, in spite of being very busy, quickly going to each table and asking what more is needed. Veg meal charge was Rs.70, but it is well-deserved. One young man ate Hilsa and another lobster. Huge variety must be. Monalisa possibly is the best Bengali veg and nonveg hotel in the whole of West Bengal. I...
Read moreThis restaurant should not be confused with Mona Lisa lodge which is few metres away from this restaurant.
Went for lunch in this restaurant and ordered veg thali, postor Bora and macher jhol. All were of good taste. Service is quick in this restaurant. Ambience is nothing great to speak about. If you compare rates here with cities then rates here are cheap but if you compare rates of this restaurant with similar restaurants in such places then rates are a bit high, but the slightly high rates are compensated by the taste of food here .
A cycle rickshaw from Bishnupur railway station to this restaurant should cost around Rs 50.
