⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Birds, a Lake, and a Few Empty Liquor Bottles
I started going to Puzhuthivakkam Lake in August 2024. The eBird website told me there was life there. Bird life. Plenty of it. I take bird photos. I don’t have the luxury of time or petrol, so the place had to be close. This one was.
I went one evening. Dusk. The sky looked tired, but the birds didn’t. Egrets, herons, kingfishers, wagtails, and a few chaps I couldn’t name. Migratory birds too — some of them rare enough to make you feel like you won a lottery without the money.
It became a weekend habit. Coffee. Camera. Puzhuthivakkam.
The lake has a good walking track. Benches too. You sit, wait, shoot (with your camera — let’s not be dramatic). I made a few friends who also liked pointing lenses at feathered things. We would sit in silence till a bird decided to pose. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn’t. Either way, we stayed.
I’ve posted photos on Google Maps. Take a look. Don’t steal them. I mean it.
Now, the sad part. Rubbish. Literal rubbish. People throw food packets, water bottles, liquor bottles. Sometimes it feels like the birds are more civilised than the walkers. The local administration should put up banners. Educate. Remind. Threaten if needed. It’s our lake, after all. We either care for it or we lose it. Like everything else we take for granted.
Puzhuthivakkam Lake is a gift. You don’t need binoculars or boots. Just a little respect and a camera if you’ve got one. And if you spot me crouching near the reeds with a long lens, wave — just don’t...
Read moreThis is one of the oldest and biggest natural lakes in this area, which has recently been renewed by desilting and building of bunds with paved walkways. The whole circumference of the lake is duly fenced with user friendly railings and the circular walkway is dotted with concrete benches for seating. The lake has a few mounds and is enriched with fish and other creatures. Mornings and evenings, one can find people from all walks of life come here for jogging, walking, strolling and sitting. I would recommend this as the heart and lungs of Puzhuthivakkam and it needs further development with...
Read moreWe really enjoy as a family especially with our kids. We get biscuit packets every time we visit to feed especially the goat as my son likes it much, strayed dogs. We thoroughly enjoy doing one full circle with our kids and never miss to visit every weekend!
it would be wonderful if people pay attention to the surroundings and don't litter. We notice every time one or other way people throw plastic items and other garbage into the lake and surroundings. It's kind of sad to see folks who still don't give a dime about the...
