Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt is still possible to go to Tumpak Sewu from Malang despite the broken bridge (due to the heavy rainfall few weeks ago). The bridge was situated about1.5-2km before the entrance of the Tumpak Sewu (unlike some drivers who told me that it took 20-30min of motorbike to reach the entrance from the broken bridge). The last part of transport by motorbike actually only took 5min. For someone who wants to walk from where the broken bridge end , it is equally possible. There is a small foot bridge for motobikes and pedestrians to walk but you have to pay to cross it.
The actual waterfall was very photogenic, we think it looks more breathtaking from the photo than it actually look in reality. The walk through the numerous waterfalls, caves and valley to the waterfall was actually more of a highlight to us than the actual waterfall.
We found the walk much harder than expected, unlike some who said it only take 30-40min to walk, it actually took us (and we are used to hiking)a good 45min -1hour (it took longer especially going back up to the entrance). There were already many reviews about walking through the water and stream to get to the waterfall so we wont add anything else. However what we didnt expect was that we thought only a small part of the path would need crossing through the water, it turned out about 60-70% of walking involved walking pass small waterfall and stream (it was really fun to walk initially but after 10-15min of continuous of crossing through water, we were like oh my God ,how much longer would the path be like this). Lastly, please be aware of the fact that there are 2 river crossings, there used to be small foot bridges(I saw them from previous online review and was expecting that when I walked), however they were destroyed due to the heavy rainfall, now everyone had to wade through the strong current river which is actually a little bit dangerous even though there is a rope for you to hold on. if you accidentally trip over(as you cannot see the bottom of the river, there were some large rocks as well as smaller rocks which makes the river bottom quite uneven) and lose you grip, you can be washed down stream, not that you would drown but you might get hurt. By the time we waded through the river (about thigh deep to us), our shorts and the underwear were completely wet. So apart from having clothes to change, make sure to get an extra underwear for change as well.
Overall it was a challenging walk and one have to have some physical fitness to do it. Be prepared to be soaking wet. Also even on weekday(we visited around 930am) there were so many visitors (both foreign and local) which took the fun away (not really a hidden gem anymore like others said) and sometimes one have to wait to pass through. So Manage your expectation. Was it worthwhile to go? for us we would have said a definite yes if the 2 footbridge were not broken (wading through the water was not easy) and that there weren't so many visitors. Perhaps if one have to go, go really early say 4-5am and aim to arrive 6-7am, that would probably be a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCoban Sewu, or it is often called by its other names such as "Tumpak Sewu" or "Grojogan Sewu" which in Javanese all has the same meaning of "A Thousand of Falls", is a group of a dream-like waterfall that we can probably call it as the best waterfall among other thousands of real waterfalls we could explore across this heavenly archipelago country. It is formed of main water flowing along a wide and vast river sourced from Mount Semeru and countless waterspring sourced from inside the giant-cliff surrounding the massive-pit where they fall together into, so monstrous yet beautiful that it creates a spectacular view that other waterfalls in Indonesia probably even the world cannot compete. From the upside view of this waterfall, we will able to see such a perfect golden-triangle of landscape panorama composition of both Mount Semeru, the river, and this Coban Sewu Waterfall. From the downside view of this waterfall, we will be able to see such a breathtaking nature wonders of how thousands sources of water are falling down from 100++ meters high simultanously and continuously in front of our eyes.
This waterfall located administratively in two region, both Sidorenggo Village, Ampelgading District (Malang Regency) and Sidomulyo Village, Pronojiwo District (Lumajang Regency). We can reach these villages from Malang City for around 65km/1 hour and 30 minutes drive or from Lumajang City around 55km/1 hour and 15 minutes drive. There are difference difficulties and time estimations of trekking down to the waterfall depends on the entrance we choose either from Malang-entrance or from Lumajang-entrance. -If we choose to enter from Malang, the approximate trekking down time is around 30-45 minutes using vertical stairway to reach the waterfall. This is recommended only for tourists who are seeking adventure. -If we choose to enter from Lumajang, the approximate trekking down time is around 15-30 minutes using horizontal stairway to reach the waterfall. This is recommended for common tourists who are not interest to the adventure. Despite two entrance options we can choose, it is better for us to always be prepared to prevent all risks we might face along the thrilling moment down to this waterfall. Noted that we will only be allowed trekking down to this waterfall if the weather is clear. It is prohibited when raining due to its extremely dangerous flood.
Around the entrance of this waterfall, currently there are many of amenities provider like kiosk as well as accommodation like homestay. The telecommunication signal around the village is good, but not down at...
