Less of a review, more of a word of advice and warning. Keep reading to know what to watch out for and keep in mind if you are planning on travelling here especially if you are a foreigner.
If you plan on coming, it's best to come on june and august. As it has the best chance of giving the best sunrise view. The reason i skipped july is because it is holiday month for indonesia therefore it is gonna be way more crowded.
If you are signed with any bromo travel agencies, you will get a jeep that can transport you from your hotel to the mountain. Each jeep can carry up to 5 people. The ride will get very bumpy so if you are prone to motion sickness, stay on the front seat and look at the road. Depending on where you stay it can take around 1 hour. Try to be on the way on 2 a.m or even better 1 a.m to catch the sunrise. DO NOT drive any vehicles on your own, the road is very dangerous, leave it to the professional drivers.
On the mountain, there are a few hills/spot to view the sunrise, but to get there is a not very big road and many jeeps will have to stop there blocking the road as there isn't an official parking spot and we are forced to exit the jeep. Depending on how early you are, you can get higher by the jeep, but if you are late and there's already many people, you'll stop very far from the hills/peak.
There are a few hills like i said, Love Hill, and the higher one Kingkong Hill (i went here since its a better view). To get here from where you stop, there are motor cycle rides (ojek). Now pay attention here. The ojek can take you to love hill and wait for you for 30.000 ($2) and kingkong hill 50.000 ($3.5). The guy will drop you off AND wait for you until you're finished watching the sunrise and take you back down the mountain to where your jeep stopped.
In holiday season or crowded scenarios, this price will inflate by a lot. If it's crowded and they charge you more than this, don't agree as you are getting scammed. They think in crowded places you will not have a lot of time to think and therefore charge crazy prices. I also recommend just ask them to drop off and not wait for you as it is cheaper, and there more ojek that can take you back down anyway so there is no need for someone to wait for you.
I got charged idr 150k/person ($11) for kingkong hill and i was with 4 other people, so i payed idr 750k ($53) just for a +- 3 km ride. If you are a foreigner they WILL charge more and you need to be very strict to them in this situation. Be assertive and tell them you know the real prices. Haggle if you can. They will refuse but be persistent.
The hilltops will get very cold, on the months i recommended, it can get to below zero degrees celsius. Be very prepared for the cold. For now that's all info i can provide for you to keep in mind.
This tourism spot despite very popular, it is poorly maintained and needs more care from the local government to manage better. Provide more space for the jeeps and motorcycles to move, fix the roads, fix the scamming ojek problem and also clean the whole place from trash and litter. Enforce rules to not litter and smoke in the mountain. Don't ruin the natural air and clean grounds.

Usually Bromo is visited after one night stay in Banyuwangi to visit and climbing the Kawah Ijen or Caldera of Ijen. Though Bromo is not located that near from here with some stops made on the way the tourists mostly enjoy the long 9 hours road drive to see the different kind of Indonesian people and their culture in the island of Java. Bromo derives from the word Brahma, one of Hindu important Gods which is believed by the hindu Tengerists to reside in the mountain. After one night rest in the mountain hotel early in cold of the morning at 04.00 pm, in the dark of early dawn up-down hill and sea sand you shall be driven in the off road of 4 wheel drive Toyota to the Penanjakan peak, whose road is bad like the surface of the moon, to witness beautifull sunrise as well as seeing chains of many Javanese mountains from there. Later on at about 07.00 pm, after finish seeing the sunrise, you shall be driven long way down the road to a certain point where the car no longer allowed to continue and the the walk on foot in the sea of sand or horse ride to hire the climb to mount Bromo is started. You claim up the straight long stairs up from the foot of mount Bromo to reach its top, 2329 meters above sea level, from where you walk carefully along the narrow walking path in the lip of big crater or caldera and looking down at smoking active volcano. Several years ago a group of French tourists were happy to checking in after long drive in Jogyakarta's hotel in the evening when they were told that the mount Bromo that they climbed and left earlier in the morning was erupting and killed some locals and tourists on the place. My friend, Rahmat, the tour leader, told me the story. His tourists...
