I booked a car and driver for 2 days to explore the Minangkabau Highlands leaving from Padang. The driver, Yopi, really looked after me. The itinerary was well thought through. There was a great mixture of cultural sites (Minangkabau Palace), food, (we had an amazing authentic West Sumatran lunch) as well as spectacular scenic sites. Yopi was a real gentleman who knew so much about the places he took me to. His local knowledge found us at some amazing locations with fantastic views of the jungle, mountains and a crater lake. I saw things that not many western people have experienced. If you want the genuine Sumatra this is it. I met plenty of warm friendly people who wanted to practice their English. Excellent communication from the get-go. Emails and whatsapp messages were replied promptly. Doni was assigned to us for our Bukittinggi trip - he was friendly, respectful, punctual, and was a skillful driver. We liked that he catered the trip to our needs (we have my elderly in laws in the group) and pace, instead of a rushed itinerary..certainly made our vacation a pleasant one. He brought us to some gems around the region - delicious local eateries (instead of very touristy ones), the beautiful Puncak Lawang , and a shop called Tangkelek which showcased a contemporary take on the Minang culture. We spent 5 days traveling around Bukittinggi with Yopi, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish.
