Named after iconic Dublin band Disorder's fifth album, Beach of a Thousand Steps, this hidden gem may be small but once you reach the bottom and look upward, it becomes a vast cathedral of vision and sound. Just like the powerhouse music group, it's difficult to escape the allure.
The pebble-scattered strand makes you feel warm and dreamy like a summer romance, but the giant encompassing walls draw you in then spit you out, as quickly as the record itself leaves you spinning in a sea of endorphins after just one listen. You're not quite sure what's just happened, but you sure as hell want to do it again.
It's equidistant to either end of the Howth cliff walk, which made it the omphalos of knacker drinking sessions, as reflected in the nadir of emotions in Fields of Bane and other tracks marking our departure from the simple world.
Another amazing thing about this place is that I've never lost my car keys or footing here. Didn't lose my virginity here either...

This is not a safe place for a picnic.The steps down are very steep, very old and broken in several places. There is nothing to hold onto as you descend as the cliff face is unstable and prone to rockfalls. Many people have fallen from these steps over the years. Just Google "Whitewater Brook" for all the news reports of people who have been rescued from here and a few who have died. There are several videos from The Coast Guard on Youtube showing people & dogs being rescued, including 2 separate incidents of people who fell from the steps and were airlifted by the Rescue 116 helicopter. Sadly some could not be saved. Last April (2021) a man died after he decided to go swimming from this beach.
