I have visited Páirc Uí Chaoimh on a few occassions since it re-opened. The new stadium is a significant improvement and is now a state of the art facility. The stadium opened in 1976 and underwent a significant two-year redevelopment before re-opening in 2017. The capacity of the venue has been increased to 45,000, making it the fourth-largest Gaelic games stadium in Ireland.
All sections of the stadium are catered for with its 18 bars and 9 food kiosks. The pitch itself looks fantastic and is Ireland's largest fully floodlit 4G All Weather Pitch. The new stadium has a Conference Centre of over 1.800 sq. metres. It has 5 conference suites the largest of which can seat 550.
The latest match I attended here was the All-Ireland Hurling quarter-final between Wexford and Clare. There was a disappointing attendance of just over 10,000 and the venue was too big for that size of audience. Thurles would have been a better half-way house for both teams and the two quarter-finals could have been held there the following day. An interesting observation is that access to the Lower South Stand is at first floor level while access to the Upper Stand is on the...
Read moreNew stadium about an hour walk grom city centre. I like the stadium but a few things need sorted out - signposting and staff not knowing where to direct people was the biggest issue. It could do with better public transport links and bars, food outlets, closer to the stadium but there are some facilities with 15 (food) to 30 minutes walk (bars). A local told me that they are two bars 10 minutes from stadium - Im not sure they are on the route to city centre. Ok, so some of these issues are not directly about the stadium but, still part of the experience and, in time, if people open businesses nearby or on the walking route, or perhaps some kind of fan park. Then this could go from a good place to visit to a great place.
Positives- clean, tidy, great likes of sight. Staff...
Read moreVisited Pairc Ui Chaoimh for first time since rebuild, quite impressed. Hope it will be maintained properly. Noted that the urinals hadn't been cleaned for some time, they had dust and debris on them. Yuk. Not sure what was going on with the tea/coffee/condiments tables, a bit odd. Pitch looked great and no obstructed views. €20 for a league match seemed a bit saucy though, but it would have been €15 if bought online the week before. Not exactly encouraging last minute attendees, game got 11k in total attendance. Great that kids are free, the next generation! I vowed never to go there again after witnessing dangerous scenes in the Cork Tipp match in 2008. Thankfully that death trap is rubble. The new place is well worth the money!...
