Tobernalt Holy Well — Attraction in County Sligo

Being so close to Sligo sometimes it’s great getting a little lost or going the long way around because you never know what you’re going to come across. I always look for the little brown signs because they are usually historical, religious or heritage sites. On this occasion we came across Tobernault Holy Well. It was not located on Google Maps until now. It was a rainy day but with all the tree coverage you don’t really feel it. We had Luna with us and it was acceptable to bring your pups along.(best to keep them on the lead so you don’t disturb anyone.) Great statues and a little sort of river runs through it. I’m always collecting holy water(not that I’m religious but very spiritual in nature). You can light candles and hang strings and such from the wishing tree there. Lovely little spot off the beaten track even if it’s just to get out and stretch your legs it’s a beautiful, tranquil setting. #nycgirlinireland #aaammmeeennn.

I stood in awe looking around this really beautiful ancient well. The name Tobernalt is derived from the Irish-Tober an Alt meaning well of the cliff. The natural spring well is beautifully situated in a small wooded area at the base of Cairns Hill. There are two cairns on the hill dating to neolithic times. It is believed the ancient pagan festival Lughnasa, the beginning of the harvest season, was celebrated here long before christianity came to Ireland.
