This beach is a popular spot for families on a day trip. It is often really busy on a summer's day. The beach is essentially made up of two segments, the second of which is known as the Garrylucas Beach. Its popular with surfers and you will see many lessons getting lessons on the strand when the weather permits. Several little food trucks also dot the area as tourists frequent the beach when the weather warms. The second beach, Garrylucas, leads one onto a rather picturesque cliff walk. This had been a favourite place for me up to recently when I was attacked by a large black dog on one segment of the walk. When I asked the owner to control the dog and pointed out the obvious danger of having a dog that size attack walkers (including children) on a cliff top, I was told by the gentleman, "well I own all this so if you don't like it , don't come back". Foolishly I expected an apology. The walk it seems is a private right of way and the owner seems to think owning the adjacent land gives his dog the right to attack you. Anyway if you choose to do this walk, be careful as the walkway gets quite close to cliff edge and perhaps its not really suitable for...

Kitesurfing review only: Can be referred to as Garylucas or Garethstown, same place! Not particularily suitable for beginners, (Coolmaine up the road is better in this regard) high tide leaves very little space to land launch and can be dangerous with close proximity to people in the carpark without good launch/land experience or tutor. Also can have a large shore dump which makes the water start very challenging for beginners. Takes a south/south west wind very well and is facing perfect direction for this. West is gusty and north or east offshore. Main kitesurfing beach in Cork. For direct South wind try Coolmaine up the road is amazing and extra good on full tide. For east wind try Ballycotton beach on east Cork side. Water quality normally always good with little to no reports of sickness after ingestion from all users. Car park beside beach at both ends very handy. Webcam by kitesportscentre.com extremely useful as often fog can dampen the wind so consult before venturing. Otherwise awesome, kitesurfed here...

I can't get enough of this place. Biggest drawback after mid-September is that they take away the lifeguards and bins when weekend day visits are still very high. The bathrooms were filthy, trash from daytrippers buying coffee and ice-cream from the vans are piled in areas where bins normally are placed. If not they are thrown wherever, or "forgotten" on the beach or walls when bathers leave for the day. During the summer it is well maintained. The council should continue the summer maintenance well into the Autumn as there were hundreds and hundreds of surfers and families on the beach these late September weekends.

A longish beach, a mix of sand and small pebbles. Sea was beautiful and clear. There is a car park and couple of benches but these were in a bad condition There is a carpark but when it is busy it can become very congested all along the strand. There is a public toilet with a disabled toilet. There was also a lot of food trucks there today (Sunday) and my report that someone is usually there during the week. There is a pub 2km away that serves food and has a garden with tables. At the weekend there were lifeguards on duty.
