Let me start by saying that Charlie is an absolute gent, he went above and beyond to make sure we were safe and comfortable throughout the entire trip.
We signed up to the three day canoe trip down the barrow, what an unreal adventure. We will be ranting and raving about this trip for years, my jaw is sore from laughing we had that much craic....
The first day was rough for us. The weather went against us and the way we packed canoes let us down. We even ended up tipping out of a canoe once but there were a few scares because we didn't listen to the advice.(let's just say we went the wrong way, our barrels got caught on submerged scaff bars, one of our barrels let water in that slowed us no end, plus our food got ruined, thankfully it wasn't any of the other barrels, nearly got pinned at a bridge with loads of flood debris, lost a paddle, then had to scale a rotten bridge balancing on I-beams, climbing down onto the floor debris to retrieve the lost paddle. Stuff of adventures or what... )
Day two we started out late, set our own pace and started fishing, from that point on we had the best time of the summer. We packed the canoes better (put the barrels in the canoe) and felt easier in the canoes. We also got a lock key, such a magic day, fantastic weather, saw such amazing sights, I never realised how beautiful the barrow is(we will be coming back). We stopped in the town and stocked up then called an early night to the canoeing, set up camp and fished through the evening into the early morning. (caught a huge bream)
Day three: Exactly like day two, pure bliss, met a few friendly faces along the way, fished and just set a relaxed pace. The sun was out all day so we all got a bit red. Landed in Graignamanagh at the hub, what a great little campsite. Charlie collected the canoes from there.
(Then found out that my car keys had shorted went I got tipped out of the boat. So had to get another key coded.)
I just want to say it again, this is the best trip I've had in Ireland unbelievable scenery and friendly people. I would recommend it anyone, I'm not the fittest but didn't feel under pressure at any stage.
Thank you again Charlie you...
Read moreWe paddled for two days on the Barrow River starting in Leighlinbridge to Graiguenamanagh. Charlie met us at the Lord Bagnal Inn with a Mad River Explorer canoe and all the necessary gear. He loaned us a copy of the book with detailed maps. The river is quite beautiful. The spring leaves were out on the trees. Yellow Iris and other wild flowers were in bloom. We enjoyed seeing lots of birds including the Mute Swan, Eurasian Kingfisher, Grey Heron, Hooded Crows, Eurasian Blackbird, Mallards, Cormorants, Common Chaffinch, and others. Paddling the river and operating the locks definitely requires that you be in good physical condition. It was quite a work out. We spent our first night camped at the park in Goresbridge. The local people were very friendly and welcoming. We spent our second night at The Hub Activities Center camped near the river. Both towns had plenty of food options. Charlie was such a delight to meet. He is very passionate about paddle sports. He went over all the details of the route and took extra time to make sure all our needs were met. He checked in on us on the second night and was a tremendous help. Due to high winds and rain we ended our trip a day early. We recently sold our canoe business in upstate NY after 40 years and were looking for a good paddling experience. Go with the Flow canoe trips down the Barrow River gave us a very unique and fun...
Read moreWe have used these guys a few times and thoroughly recommend them. Charlie is very good at what he does. We canoed down the Barrow, from Goresbridge to Graignamanagh by the way of the rapids and also the locks. Both have their challenges, but it's a highly enjoyable way to spend time in the great outdoors. We did the thrills and spills package once, and I would advise couples to not use the double seated canoes, but rather go separate. The double seated canoes are just too hard to balance, and you will tip over going down those rapids. We also did the package where you are independent of a guide, and paddled down the calmer side of the river, through the locks. From memory, there are around 10 locks on this route, where you have to physically pull the boat up out of the water and carry it to the other side to get around the lock. The 1st lock is a killer with the high drop and trying to get a foothold on the wall. Don't give up! If you make this one, all the others are child's play. The final straight into Graignamanagh is so picturesque with the hills and forest, it makes the previous few hours slog so worth it. Charlie then drives you back in his van back to Goresbridge, to get your car. A great day out, and I will try to do...
