THE CHURCH OF THE PRIMACY OF SAINT PETER - TABGHA, ISRAEL : Located by the side of the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee - 100 yards off-shore lies the spot where Jesus, after his resurrection, yelled out to his disciples Peter, James, John, Thomas, Nathanael and others to throw their net on the other side of the boat when no fish caught in their net all the night before – Also the site where Jesus laid out a breakfast of bread and fish for his Apostles – The same site where Jesus told Peter to "Feed my sheep" after the miraculous catch of 153 fishes from the Sea of Galilee – The same site where Jesus appeared the third time after his resurrection - Considering its holiness, a church was constructed here in the 4th century AD – Upon the remnants of this church a new Franciscan church was constructed in 1933 – This is the one we see today, called the Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter – In front of the Altar of the church, the rock upon which Jesus laid out the breakfast of bread and fish for his Apostles can be seen as such - This is a limestone rock and is called Mensa Christi (Table of Christ) - The church marks the spot of Jesus' reinstatement of Peter as the chief of Apostles – Visitors have to walk 50 metres down the road to reach here – Behind the church, about 50 metres away, lies the vast stretch of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) – It was here Jesus’ disciples Peter and others were...

The Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter, situated on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, holds immense significance for Christians. It is believed to be the place where Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection and reaffirmed Peter's role as the leader of the apostles. The church is built upon a rock known as "Mensa Christi," or "Table of Christ," where Jesus is said to have prepared breakfast for his disciples. Pilgrims visiting the site can see the stone upon which the meal was supposedly served. The peaceful ambiance and stunning views of the Sea of Galilee create a serene and reflective atmosphere. The Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter offers a sacred space for prayer and contemplation, allowing visitors to connect with the pivotal moment in Christian history and reflect on the role of Peter in the early Church.

This lovely black rock church and its stunning beach are not where the loaves and fish are commemorated. That's next door at Tabgha. This Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter commemorates when Jesus told Simon Peter he would build his church on this rock. As a Protestant who knows the church's true cornerstone and believes we are all stones in God's temple the sacredness of the church building is a little lost on my Philistine sensibilities... But the beach, ah, the beach! This is the likely site where Jesus called Simon and Andrew from their nets, and appeared after his resurrection to cook a fish breakfast for them on the shore. The seven stones on the shore have been there from time immemorial, and several streams run off into the lake nearby which draw fish to feed. This beach, along with the original synagogue at Magdala, were the most sacred moments in Israel for this iconoclastic Protestant.

Amazing and humble church. This is the place believed to be where Jesus instituted Peter as the first Pope. This is the church of the Primacy. Views were amazing, we had a splash around in the water next to the church, it was hard walking around because of the pebbles. We sat on the rocks just chilling next to the water. There was a round seating area that was beautiful to reflect in. The church itself is peaceful. They left a rock there that may have had Jesus and Peter chill out by. A statue was built showing Jesus with Peter kneeling to him. Only negative thing about it were the hordes of tourists flooding in. But it is expected.
