Review: Burgruine Neuhaus Maultasch – A Hidden Treasure in the Trees Worth the trip, without question. In September 2024, we set out for Burgruine Neuhaus Maultasch and found exactly what we needed—a peaceful hike along a shaded mountain path, surrounded by cooling trees and the kind of quiet that reminds you why getting back to nature matters. The hike itself was pleasant and not overly strenuous, and by the time we reached the ruins, we felt like we’d stepped back in time. The site offers a self-guided tour, with some historical information at the entrance to give context before you wander. We passed only a few other travelers on the way up, and during our time exploring the castle, there was just one other couple for a short while. The rest of the visit, we had the place to ourselves. The ruins are fascinating—starting with a cave that opens into a large domed cellar, a small jail cell tucked beneath a staircase, remnants of a kitchen, a cistern, winding stairs, and walkways leading to large rooms with windows and openings overlooking the valley. Standing there, it was easy to imagine royalty living in this very spot hundreds of years ago, looking out across the valley from their perch. If you enjoy history, quiet hikes, and the feeling of discovering something off the beaten path, Burgruine Neuhaus Maultasch is well worth your time.

There are 2 paths that lead up to the ruin, one is steeper (parking lot is on street level), and one easier (parking higher up the mountain). We chose the easier way, its quite pleasant even for beginner hikers. When its 30+ °C on the sun, its around 20 on the road in the woods. There are several benches on the way, even tho its a really easy path. You are walking on the edge of the mountain, but there are fences to keep you safe. After 20 minutes, the steeper and milder paths collide (I assume), and there is a sign saying thats its 10 more minutes until the ruins. It really is 10 minutes but quite steep and rocky, the rocks kinda form steps. So its around 30-40 minutes hiking but the view is really spectacular and worth it.
