During the summer time, I would recommend being here at 06:00. Take a ticket on the (this) toll road (pay on your return) and continue up to the refugee house just in time for the light to start to hit the mountain peaks.

Enough parking places available if you plan your trip to arrive at the Auronzo refugee hut at 06:00. Bite the bullet, set an early alarm (04:00 for us) and get going. We were among the first cars to arrive.

Camper vans may find more difficulty, people apparently tend to stay the night.

Paying for the toll road ticket on your way back is automated (cash or credit card accepted) and costs 30€ at the time of writing.

What a joke this was! We waited for almost an hour, the police came and wanted all of us to turn around. The display was showing 38 free spots on the parking lot but they didn’t let anyone in. Apparently they miscalculated how many people they had let in and it was too full now… that’s what we guessed because the communication was very bad… From other people waiting we understood that this was not the first time this was happening… Very, very ill organised!! This was a huge disappointment.

Wir haben aus mehreren Quellen erfahren, dass die Auffahrt nach 19:00 bis 00:00 gratis ist und man erst ab 00:00 bezahlt. Dies haben wir gemacht, oben im Auto geschlafen und sind am nächsten Tag um 10:30 schon wieder runtergefahrn (laut Internet dann 30€) Bei der Maut war dann ein unfreundlicher Mann dem das ziemlich egal war, er hat selbst nicht gewusst was er redet und hat nur um den heißen Brei gelabert. Er hat 60€ verlangt (und hatte nicht mal eine gute Ausrede warum wir jetzt 60 statt 30€ bezahlen müssen) Wir wurden von dem Herrn sicher abgezockt, wir haben nicht mal eine Rechnung bekommen! Zudem kommt dazu, dass man für die 60€ dann oben eine öffentliche Toilette findet (1€) die nur von 7-18:00 geöffnet hat, bei der Auronzo Hütte dürfen nur Kunden auf die Toilette! Somit hat man oben nicht mal eine Toilette!! Schade, dass man immer überall über den Tisch gezogen wird! In Südtirol gibt es bestimmt andere schöne Orte wo man sich nicht so...
