Amazing - must-do. Free in November, 2 Euro normally, worth it. The history of "Limonaie" the traditional Lemon Houses to grow all king of citrus fruits on the Lake of Garda. These construction are shaping the landscape of the city, Limone sul Garda. The local municipality bought back this specific Lemon House to convert this into a meseum and preserve traditions and cultures of the past. Now, the nicely restored terraces hosts and boast with all kind of fruit: lemons, oranges, cedars, mandarin, bergamotto with a mix of smess quite unique. Part of the building are now being worked to host a small history on how these houses were managed: you can find ancient pictures, tools and many panels written in 4 differen languages (IT, EN,FR, DE). The best of all this, is that, after wandering trough garden and museum, you still have one of the nicest viewpoint on the city. This is NO PROFIT: the local municipality just gives fruit to fundations and income of the entrance (a very minimal fee) is just for the service of keeping this open. In November this was even free. For a small price, you see history, trees, and lake landscape....
Read moreThrough the beautiful streets of Limone, you will find your way easily to the Lemon-castle. If you look down at the streets, you will see small tiles with arrows everywhere, pointing you on your way. The city is proud of their lemon-history and with good reason. The Lemon-castle is 1.633 square yards of impressive terraces, with huge lemon trees. At winter-time beams are placed on top of pillers to protect the lemon trees from frost. An impressive structure to see from the lake. The museum also has a great variation of other citrus-fruits from all over the world. It's a place for great local-history. Go spend the 2 euros (1 for a child) and enjoy the beautiful terraces and the view over the roofs of Limone and the Garda-lake. Remember to bring cash! Read moreWe enjoyed looking around "El Castel" lemon house. It was particularly interesting to learn that J.W Goethe was struck by the Limone landscape when travelling from Malcesine. We travelled by boat from Malcesine too which was fun. There is actually a stone portrait of Goethe in the gardens of the castle. Many pillars and walls are still there to remind us of the past of the lemon cultivation in Limone. There was an exhibition of paintings when we visited and one could vote for the one they liked.
