Liternum was an ancient town of Campania, southern central Italy, near "Patria lake", on the low sandy coast between Cumae and the mouth of the Volturnus. It was probably once dependent on Cumae. In 194 BC it became a Roman colony.

Being a local living abroad, I was extremely surprised when I visited the site. It's beautiful, well kept and clean. Unfortunately the lake is extremely polluted and the areas by the shore were stinking of something rotten, but it has nothing to do with the site itself. You can see some Roman ruins and a beautiful garden. By the entrance there is a nice playground for children, also well kept and clean. Parking is free. A wonderful small Roman town that the ruins can still be seen today. I lived just a few minutes away and lived to come and see the small site. It is a really nice historical stop if you are spending a day by the lake or in Lago Patria.
