Lake Braies (Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee) is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. Nestled in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, this emerald-green lake mirrors the towering peaks around it, creating a scene so perfect it feels unreal. The reflections, the crisp mountain air, and the serene atmosphere make it a must-see destination.
The 4 km loop trail around the lake is a delight—easy enough for most, with the western side being flat and accessible, while the eastern side offers a bit more of a challenge with some steps and inclines. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, and every turn offers a new, stunning perspective of the lake and surrounding mountains.
For a unique experience, renting a rowboat is highly recommended. Gliding over the calm waters, surrounded by majestic peaks, is both peaceful and exhilarating. However, be aware that during peak times, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM, the area can become quite crowded, and rowboat rentals may sell out.
To preserve the natural beauty and manage the influx of tourists, access to the Pragser Tal valley is restricted from July 10 to September 10. During this period, between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM, private vehicles are not allowed unless you have an online reservation or a valid transit permit. It's best to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid these restrictions and the crowds.
Visiting Lake Braies is free, but parking fees apply. There are several parking lots (P1 to P4), with P3 being a popular choice due to its proximity to the lake. Alternatively, public transportation options are available and recommended during the restricted access period.
In summary, Lake Braies is a stunning destination that offers both tranquility and adventure. Whether you're hiking, rowing, or simply soaking in the views, it's an experience that stays with you long after...
Read moreWe have been here in the months everybody warned us before. In Mid-July. But lucky us, the weather wasn't that good and it was a weekday. No queues, no crowds. When we took the obligatory boat ride in a rain break, we were even the only boat in the lake. Sure it is expensive (the ticket to go to the lake by car or motorbike). But only if you come between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. Out of these hours, as far as I know it's "free". And the parking is included and also the shuttle ride. Shuttle from the car park to the lake was function good. Small restaurant/bistro at the lake with reasonable prices. In the end they want to "regulate" the mass tourism, which is, if it's functional a good tool.
If you come walking/hiking or by public transport, it's free anyway.
The boat ride is a fair price as well (15 € per person), even if it looks expensive at the beginning. But we got also two magnets (souvenirs), postcards (as much as we wanted) and two umbrellas.
We haven't done the walk around the lake, as it started to rain/thunderstorm again. But I think it's a nice walk (around 1,5 hours, but not so easy access, if you go it with a pram or have a walking disability.
Overall it was a nice visit. Can recommend it.
4 stars only, as if you book your online ticket you have to choose direct a restaurant where you would like to spend the 20€ voucher that is actually included in the 40€. A good tool as well to support local businesses, but we booked very spontaneous and so couldn't do research which restaurant we should use and chosen just one but didn't used the voucher in the end. A free choice after would be...
Read moreLake Braies, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, is unquestionably a gem that should not be missed. This destination is by far the best location we visited in the Dolomiti region, offering an unparalleled blend of stunning views and peaceful tranquility.
The scenery of Lake Braies is nothing short of breathtaking. Imagine crystal-clear waters reflecting a sky that ranges from the bright blues of midday to the warm hues of sunset, all framed by the rugged peaks of the Dolomites rising majestically in the background. This panoramic view seems straight out of a postcard, so stunning it almost feels surreal.
But what struck me even more than the view was the profound sense of peace that pervades the place. Whether you're sitting by the water's edge, taking a leisurely stroll, or enjoying a picnic, the serene ambiance allows you to truly disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. The sounds of the gently lapping water and the whispering breeze, coupled with the grandeur of the landscape, create a magical, almost therapeutic, atmosphere.
Lake Braies isn't just a sightseeing spot; it's a place that touches your soul. It's an experience that stays with you, not just in the form of beautiful photographs but also as a serene memory that you can revisit whenever you need a moment of peace.
In conclusion, if you're visiting the Dolomites, Lake Braies is an absolute must-visit. Its stunning views and tranquil ambiance make it a true haven of natural beauty. It's not just a place you visit, but a place you feel, and that feeling is one of...
