If you want to get closer to heaven, here in this sanctuary you can feel a special emotion and then walk again to broaden your horizons. The sanctuary stands on the summit of Monte Santo di Lussari, a mountain in the Julian Alps in the municipality of Tarvisio, at approximately 1,789 meters above sea level. This remarkable altitude makes it one of the highest sanctuaries in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Europe. The sanctuary can be reached by cable car from Camporosso or on foot via the Pilgrim's Path. Legend tells of a shepherd who lost his sheep and the next day found them kneeling around a bush where a statue of the Madonna and Child was placed.In 1360 the Patriarch of Aquileia decided to build a chapel on that spot to honor the event. The current building is the result of various expansions and renovations. The place is considered a spiritual meeting center for Italian, German, and Slavic pilgrims.The doors of the sanctuary are open at the times written for all of us in this jubilee...
Read moreThis is a wonderful stop on your spiritual journey. The lift up the mountain is reasonably priced, the view is awesome. If u have physical limitations, the lift operator will try to accommodate. The sanctuary itself is amazing. How can u not be spiritually inclined when u are above the clouds? My only complaint is for someone physically limited, the stairs to the level of the church is a barrier. Also, a public washroom would b nice. Otherwise it is so beautiful there. There are restaurants and souvenir...
