The Winterline WWII Museum at Venafro is dedicated to the central Italy campaign along the Bernhardt Line, from November 1943 to 5th March 1944 and it is breathtaking. It has to be seen to be believed as words alone cannot do it justice. Housed on 2 floors, it is an extraordinary private collection of items collected by Luciano Bucci and his friend from age12. There are wonderful, historically accurate and original displays of uniforms, weapons and armament, among much else. The museum was built in 2007 from a huge collection of items found and assembled over 30 years. They are still collecting artefacts and memorabilia from the war, found in the neighbourhoods and mountains around Venafro. You will be given an unhurried, in-depth tour of the museum, stories told with passion and knowledge. The collection contains large numbers of photographs, documents, letters and display cases with contents ranging from medical supplies, to iron rations, and many of the personal effects that belonged to the soldiers. Some of the most memorable exhibits are the cameos; recreated scenes, depicted in minute and realistic detail with life-like mannequins ranging, for example, from the interior of a small home, accurately recreated, with an elderly lady and a soldier, to face-to-face encounters of soldiers. All wearing original uniforms where possible and with original equipment collected from the battle fields. Luciano is passionate about his museum as demonstrated in his reconstructions, recreations and exhibitions. An amazing and unforgettable museum. All in all, it is a stunning encapsulation of the reality of war at that time and in that region. It is entertaining as well as informative. The visitor comes away with a genuine sense of understanding of what the combatants and the local civilians went through on both sides – the horror and privation of war in its most raw sense even with uniforms stained with the blood of the wearer, and letters and pictures of loved ones. This museum is most highly recommended and the visitor will not be...
Read moreThere’s few words that can serve do justice to this amazing museum and the persons behind it and that can also do it justice. But the Winterline Venafro War Museum is a first-class military museum like the ones you would see in a major city. The fact that’s its smaller in size doesn’t matter as it is rich (but never stuffed) with awesome artifacts and documents of all the Allied combatants of the war, from the Americans and the British to the New Zealanders and the Moroccans. Rare weapons, uniforms, gears, and knives. All of it original and accurately displayed. More than the things in it, however, is the historical accounts that Mr. Luciano Bucci tells, with great honesty and passion, that turn this museum into a true gem. With him we were able to visit the real battlefields, on the mountains surrounding Venafro, where the men of the First Special Service Force and other Allied forces fought like hell during...
Read moreThis is a fantastic museum that gives guests a comprehensive understanding of a brutal (but sometimes overlooked) campaign during World World II. The museum is laid out very well and contains a wide variety of artifacts. What is even more remarkable is the fact that nearly all these objects were found and collected by the museum owners on expeditions they launched into the mountains from the time they were children. One of the owners, Luciano, served as a guide to me and a group of my students. Not only was he friendly and knowledgeable, but he also explained how and where he discovered much of this extraordinary collection. Simply having the chance to chat with Luciano makes a visit well worth your time and the splendid collection will ensure that your experience will form...
