The Coronation Market in Kingston, Jamaica, is a vibrant and bustling hub that offers an authentic taste of the island’s culture and agricultural bounty. Known as the largest open-air market in the country, it is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the heart of Jamaican life. The market is a one-stop destination for fresh, organic produce, all sourced directly from local farms. From juicy fruits like mangoes and pineapples to root vegetables like yams and cassava, the variety is impressive, and the quality is unmatched. The vibrant colours and aromas of the market create a sensory feast that truly captures the essence of Jamaica. One of the standout features of the coronation market is its convenience. Everything you need is essentially in one place, making it a practical spot for both locals and visitors. Parking is plentiful, but it’s advisable to avoid Saturdays if possible, as the market tends to be overwhelmingly crowded. The atmosphere, however, remains lively and welcoming. Vendors and shoppers alike are friendly, always ready to assist or share a smile, which adds to the market’s charm. When visiting, it’s important to dress appropriately. The market can get quite hot, especially during peak hours, so wearing light, breathable clothing is recommended. Comfortable footwear is also a must, as you’ll likely spend hours exploring the stalls and soaking in the vibrant energy. Whether you’re a food enthusiast, a culture seeker, or simply curious about Jamaican life, the coronation market offers an unforgettable experience that’s as rich and diverse as the island itself.

Located in Kingston Jamaica this is biggest fresh food market market in the island. The best days to attend is on a Thursday to Sunday where you are gauranteed to find high quality food produce, herbs and spices. The area may be considered volatile due to several gangs operating in the vicinity. But there is a high police presence so do not be afraid. The best part of my weekly visits to this market is the love and warmth of the vendors. They easily become family and are very difficulty to not remember. P.S I now take my entire family to the market with me including my 4 year old daughter.

Coronation market consider Thursdays as ā€œmarket day ā€œthat’s when fresh vegetables are carried in from other countries to sell there. Sometimes the prices are high. Sometimes it is low, but sometimes you can get a special deal on half of the vegetables you are looking for. It is not a area where you should bring jewelries Arashi because people wondering in the market trying to rob people and hurt people so when you are visiting coronation market, you must visit safely and be safe because it’s not a safe area.

Here you can get all the local fruits and vegetables you can think of (ask if its local, uf thats what you want). You can also save a bit and get a bit fresher produce there (compared to the supermarkets). You can also negotiate prices, especially when you are purchasing multiple items or alot of an item from one vendor. Budget around 5000 for produce that can last up to a week and a half, for two people.

The closer you are to the inside of the market building the better the prices. Additionally the earlier you go, the better the selection there is.

Go as early as possible (5:30 am - 6 am on a Saturday), there will be people there and less sun as it can get really hot.

The negatives of the market are that, it is not organized and alot of the produce aren't local. It is also not the cleanest space and you have to be a bit careful with valuables (leave them at home) as there are pick pockets in the market. There is also an issue with parking close to the market, but paid, somewhat secure parking is available about a 7 minutes walk away (if you have heavy bags this will be hard). Otherwise you can park to the side of the street closest...
