(Trip was made back then on 27 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit)

Some people say that the autumn foliage would look the same after seeing it a few times, and that one would get sick from it all after a while. Well I beg to differ.

Every autumn foliage site I’ve visited has their own unique character and individual charm and no two will look or feel the same.

Kongorinji is the 7th time I’m viewing the autumn foliage and my interest has yet to dwindle.

We were very fortunate that we managed to visit this wonderful place thanks to the help of a very kind staff at Hikone’s tourist information centre (who booked a special taxi shuttle service), despite the autumn viewing season having just ended and the shuttle bus was no longer in service.

Even though the autumn season was coming to an end, fortunately a lot of the trees have yet to shed most of their leaves and we were able to still appreciate it’s beauty.

Just like Saimyoji, Kongorinji also has a beautiful trail lined with maple trees and a breathtaking garden where you can soak in the lush autumn colours. The temple at the top is enveloped in warm vivid colours as if it’s being held in the sun’s warm embrace.

The maple leaves which carpeted the floor marks the end of the autumn season, evoking an entirely different feeling and signifies the beginning of winter.

It is also known for colourfully dressed jizo statues and a national treasure main temple which houses the 11-faced Kannon statue 13 other statues of important cultural properties.

Would love to return again in the future when travelling is...

Kongorin-ji, located at 874 Matsuoji, Aishō, Echi District, Shiga, Japan, is a historic Buddhist temple with roots dating back to the 8th century. Founded by the esteemed monk, Roben, in 741, it initially served as a place for ascetic training. Over the centuries, Kongorin-ji evolved, gaining significance as a center for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. The temple's name, translating to "Diamond Wheel," reflects its focus on the Vajra, symbolizing indestructibility and enlightenment.

Throughout its history, Kongorin-ji faced periods of destruction and reconstruction, witnessing the ebb and flow of time. The present structure, reconstructed in the Edo period, showcases remarkable architectural and artistic elements. The temple's serene surroundings and lush landscape contribute to its spiritual ambiance. Kongorin-ji stands not only as a testament to Japan's rich religious heritage but also as a tranquil retreat inviting visitors to explore its cultural and historical...
