阿蘇山中に広がる草原地帯で、中世には山岳信仰の霊場として栄えて、坊舎や庵が立ち並び数百人の修行者が生活していたそうです。

現在は往時の隆盛を示す面影は残っておらずただ石碑が立っているのみですが、草原を阿蘇パノラマラインの道路が一直線に貫いており、とても雄大な景観を楽しむことができます。 ハイキングコースが整備されているので歩いて散策するのもオススメですよ。
