The Beppu Ropeway is a spectacular attraction that provides visitors with breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience in the scenic city of Beppu, Japan.

The journey begins at the base station, where you board the ropeway. As you ascend, the panoramic vistas of Beppu Bay and the surrounding lush landscapes start to unfold, leaving you in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds you. The ride itself is smooth and comfortable, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the scenery.

At the upper station, you have the option to explore the hiking trails and observation decks. These vantage points offer some of the most stunning views of Beppu and its famous hot springs. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the neighboring islands in the distance.

One of the standout features of the Beppu Ropeway is its accessibility for all ages and fitness levels. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply looking for a relaxed sightseeing experience, this attraction caters to a wide range of visitors.

The ropeway operates year-round, allowing you to enjoy the changing seasons from a unique perspective. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, while autumn offers vibrant foliage, making each visit a different visual treat.

The staff at the Beppu Ropeway are friendly and accommodating, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. The ticketing process is straightforward, and there are often package deals available that include admission to nearby attractions, such as the Beppu Tower.

A fun excursion from Beppu. To get here, you need to take a very crowded bus #36, a taxi, or drive.

Tickets are sold for single trip or return tickets. Not sure why they sell single tickets. There is another ticket sales counter at the top, so I assume it is to trick you into paying more.

The gondola ride up was smooth, but there are open windows. So, it lets in a cold breeze in winter. I assume it can be stuffy in summer. Staff don't seem to regulate how many people can board each gondola. Both rides were rather claustrophobic.

At the top is a small temple & shrine if you're into that sort of thing. There are some observation platforms near the gondola station. There is also another down one of the paths.

There is really one main path leading to the summit. Near the summit, there is a loop to visit shrines to the mountain deities. I suggest taking your time with the climb as I found myself getting a bit dizzy.

I cannot say it was peaceful since there were many children running around, throwing snowballs. There were also many modern towers on the mountain, breaking up any sense of being surrounded by nature.

The summit marker was surrounded by mud and puddles. So it was very slippery to approach.

If you want a scenic gondola ride and some exercise, this is good. Hopefully you can go when there are no children...

One of the touristic attractions of Beppu, the Beppu Ropeway takes you almost to the top of Mount Tsurumi.

A couple of minutes walk from Tsurumi Sanjo Station (i.e. cable car top stop) you can find an observation spot offering a great view over Beppu city and the harbour, given it's a clear day.

From the Tsurumi Sanjo Station it takes about 15 minutes on foot (don't worry, the road is marked and paved) to the Tsurumi Summit. Bear in mind that Tsurumi Summit is not the highest peak around - a 1.5 hours hike from there will lead you to a way higher point.

The cable car itself is very large, therefore I assume people using wheelchairs should have no problem. The ride itself takes less than 10 minutes.

There are coin lockers available at the bottom stop. A few minutes walk away is a souvenir shop with a large selection of Kyushu alcoholic beverages.

I rated it 4 starts for 2 reasons:

Extremely expensive in my opinion- 1500 Japanese Yen round trip. Getting there by public transport is very inconvenient, 1 bus an hour or something like that. Be aware that recently, probably due to the CoVid19 pandemic, some of the "Sightseeing" buses don't go anymore, although Google...
