Funatsu Lava Tree Molds — Attraction in Fujikawaguchiko

Quite far away from anything else but worth the visit as ultimately means less tourists. I wouldn't recommend attempting the narrowest section if you're unfit or have bad knees, or suffer from any form of claustrophobia. Otherwise it's a very unique experience. We made the mistake of getting a taxi here and figured we'd get a bus back. The taxi cost ¥3800 from the main station in town, and on the return trip the buses only come once an hour. We missed the first one by a couple minutes and the bus we ended up getting was 5 minutes late, which is odd for Japan. Not much reception here so I advise to plan ahead for this. Staff lady at the desk was lovely, she even held into our bags for us at no cost. Her English was limited but she managed to explain the transport system back, with a few laughs...

Really recommend visiting these tree molds. One of our highlights in the area. Entry was only 200 yen for adults. 富士がつくった溶岩樹型。 火山の噴火で流れ出した溶岩が、裾野の森を飲み込み、冷え固まった火成岩なのだが、固まったとはいえ、まだまだ高温の溶岩、飲み込まれた樹木はその中で燃え尽き、その形の空洞を残す。

溶岩樹型とは火山の威力の凄まじさと、木という生き物の堅固さが織りなす自然現象なのだ。

ここの場合、５本の木が繋がって溶岩樹型を形成している。 大人（ＸＸＬサイズ）がなんとか屈みながらもとおり抜けることができたということは、直径100㎝以上はあるということだ。 それぞれが相当な大木だったことがうかがわれる。

この神秘の自然現象は当然のことながら、信仰の対象ともされる。

ここは浅間信仰や富士講の聖地である。 浅間信仰の主神は浅間大神だが、その正体を木花之佐久夜毘売であると解釈されている。

実際、ここも木花之佐久夜毘売にちなんだ場所であり、洞の中には夫・邇邇藝命とともに、夫婦の木像が安置されている。 胎内樹型の入り口にある神社は無戸室浅間神社といい、「無戸室」は記紀に記載のある火中出産で登場する産屋「無戸八尋殿」に由来している。 また、溶岩樹型を胎内樹型と呼ぶぐらいで、この洞を木花之佐久夜毘売の胎内とみなしており、ここを通ることで人は生まれ変われると言われている。

人が入って散策できる規模の溶岩樹型としては、吉田胎内樹型とココが挙げられるが、吉田胎内樹型は内部を一般公開していない。 という意味で船津胎内樹型は、一般人が溶岩樹型に触れることができる場として貴重な存在だが、その割には知られていないような・・・。
