Owari Jōjō Castle Ruins — Attraction in Kasugai

Jōjō Castle (上条城, Jōjō-jō) was a hirashiro (平城, castle constructed on the plains). It was built in 1218 by Osaka Kouzen. After the battle of Komaki, Toyotomi Hideyoshi stayed at Jōjō Castle. The founder of Higashikasugai, Mayor Hayashi Kimbei, lived here during the Meiji period.

It's nice to see the remains of a castle which has lent it's name to this ward (Jojo Cho). At the first sight I also thought that this place should be maintained better. But then on a second thought, may be we don't need to renovate and reconstruct every fallen castle. As long as you keep that area protected and not let other private buildings there it can be a good gift for the future generations to...

城はかなり広かったようですが、中心部のみが土塁とともに残っています。駐車場だったと認識していたのですが、今年になって駐車場は廃されたようで、行ってみると、土塁の草は狩られ、鋭いトレンチは入れられており、発掘調査が行われていることが分かります。他の方の説明で現地説明会があるようですが、今後どうなるのかはわかりません。素晴らしい土塁が残るのでなんとか残して欲しいものです。

城は木曽義仲の郎党今井兼平の子孫小坂孫九郎光善が築城したといいます。８代目重之のときに林姓に改めたといいますが、小坂氏表記で続きますし、後に入る林氏は別から来たということにもなっていたりして、混在が見受けられます。 戦国期に小坂家が断絶すると、織田信長の命で前野氏の雄吉が母方の小坂氏の跡を継いだとされています。下条町の吉田城も小坂氏の持ち城であったようで、吉田城を下条城、こちらを上条城としたようです。 江戸時代には林氏が在城し、瀬戸市の水野陣屋の総庄屋を務めました。明治期には地租改正反対運動の指導者となった林金兵衛が初代東春日井郡長となり、城址にある石碑はこの林金兵衛を顕彰したものになります。 その後昭和になって、当主も途絶え、母屋も火事で焼失したりして、不動産屋の所有となり、駐車場になっていました。
