Fantastic! The adult in me was wowed by the beautiful architecture which was both majestic and fitting for the historical and significant treasures within. The ovalesque atrium (look up for the detailed ceiling opening) is reminiscent of a dinosaur egg (my impression at least). It’s set in the beautiful countryside of Fukui. The animatronics and graphics showed off the best in Japanese technology. The kid in me just watched the tyrannosaur and fukuiraptor at length, delighting in the life-like creatures. The complete fossils however just took your breath away. So much to see and learn I will just have to return! Took public transport as was staying in Fukui a few days for the zen, the food, the cliffs and the dinos :) and the amazingly friendly people of Fuku#. Travelled via the Hokuriku Area Pass <¥7,000 for 4-days inclusive of Echizen rail> offered by JR West. The connecting buses are well publicised (¥300 each way, cash only, last departure 17:13). Echizen seems to be offering a set day pass for both train and bus with considerable savings for families/groups. Museum ticket is very reasonable at ¥1,000 and reserved via website (QR code is the ticket). Really a must! #DinosaurPrefecture #Fukui #LandOfZen&Dinos

Nestled in the heart of Fukui, this remarkable museum is a haven for dinosaur enthusiasts. As you step off at Fukui Station, you’ll be greeted by a bipedal dinosaur clad in a white lab coat—a whimsical introduction to the prehistoric wonders that await. The journey to the museum involves a scenic 75-minute ride via local train and bus, but the anticipation builds with each passing minute. Once you arrive, prepare to be awestruck by the sheer number of skeletal models on display. From towering T. rex replicas to intricate stegosaurs, the collection spans eons and ignites curiosity. But it’s not just about static exhibits. Witness the meticulous work of paleontologists as they delicately clean fossilized mud from unearthed bones—a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of discovery. Whether you’re a seasoned dino aficionado or a curious traveler, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum promises an adventure that transcends time. 🦕🌿🔍 For more information and to secure your spot, be sure to reserve your timed entry ticket in advance through the museum’s website. And don’t forget your sense of wonder—it’s the best companion for exploring ancient mysteries! 🌟🦖

I am one of dinosaur fans and I enjoyed looking at many fossils and exhibits in the museum. There were hundreds of them and I was satisfied with that. The fossil hunting training rooms were also really enjoyable and educational. However, I felt dismayed by the fact that some of the information were outdated. For example, the skull fossil of Deinonychus is supposed to be narrower, but the museum showed it as a broad and wide skull, which was previously thought because experts believed it was relatively close to Allosaurus, which has a broad skull. Also, the life restoration models next to the fossil and at the new exhibit had NO PLUMAGE. Recently scientists found quill knobs, which are evidence of feathers, in a forearm of a Velociraptor fossil. I understand that fossils, even replica ones, are extremely expensive and hard to reconstruct. However, I think the museum should at least put plumage on the dromaeosaurid models or even just mention about it.

Best dinosaur museum in the world! So many complete skeletons and fossils of your favorite species. Most are casts but you can still see what they looked like. There was a special exhibition you need to pay extra but it was worth it. Also if you want to see the place where they found the real fossils and excavate, then you need to take the special bus that's around 3000¥. There's also a paid activity to clean a fake fossil and then build up a T.Rex skull but only during the mornings and takes about 1 hour and a half. Come early because it is quite far, especially if you are only going to Fukui for it from Kyoto like I did. Careful with the train schedules, and then the bus to the museum, the last one is around 17:15. The museum closes at 17 hrs but you might spend time looking at the shop outside.
