Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum – A Journey Through Time
Tucked away in the lush hills of Katsuyama, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is one of Japan’s most remarkable destinations for lovers of natural history. Widely regarded as one of the top dinosaur museums in the world, it offers an unforgettable journey through prehistoric times — from the origins of the universe to the dramatic extinction of the dinosaurs.
The museum is home to an impressive collection of full-scale dinosaur skeletons, authentic fossil discoveries, and meticulously crafted replicas, many of which were excavated right in the region. With over 40 mounted dinosaur skeletons on display — including the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Fukuiraptor (a species discovered in Fukui itself) — the exhibits are both scientifically rich and visually awe-inspiring.
Beyond being a museum, this institution is also an active research center, where paleontologists continuously unearth and study new finds. Visitors can peer into the world of modern science and see how our understanding of the prehistoric world is still evolving.
The museum is particularly well-suited for families and children. Its interactive displays, hands-on activities, and dynamic presentations make complex scientific concepts accessible and exciting. One could easily spend several hours here, immersed in a world of learning and wonder.
Even before you step inside the museum, the experience begins: the approach to the building is lined with life-sized dinosaur statues and animatronic creatures, creating a thrilling “Dino Walk” that builds anticipation with every step.
Currently, the museum also hosts a special Pokémon x Dinosaur exhibition, blending the worlds of science and pop culture. This unique collaboration adds another layer of excitement for young visitors and fans of the iconic franchise.

Read moreThis was our second time at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. My son is six now. The last time we visited the museum he was two-years old. I think that there was more of a wow factor when he was that age but I think at this age there was more of an appreciation.
I think we spent 3 hours at the museum which I think is an appropriate amount of time. The main hall that has all of the dinosaur fossils is really great. They have benches placed around where you can sit down and appreciate some of the intricacies of the dinosaur bones and the magnitude of just how bit these beasts were.
We had to make an appointment to enter the museum which helped a lot to keep things from getting overcrowded. I never felt like I was stepping on other peoples’ toes. I am a big guy and I can easily get claustrophobic in places that are too crowded.
The ramp that winds it way upstairs does a great job of giving you a different view of the dinosaurs. Once you get upstairs there are rocks and more fossils to look at. There are some interactive exhibits there as well which are good at keeping kids interested for the final leg of the tour.
I think there were some other exhibits off to the sides of the atrium but we didn’t go into any of those. There is a video library on one floor where you can sit and watch some videos which was a nice way to cap off the experience.
I’m not sure I would probably go for a third time but it is definitely worth a trip if you have never been before.
I think some kids could get bored without more interactive exhibits (but I might have also missed them if they were off to the sides of the atrium).
The museum has tons of parking so that should not be a problem for...

After attending the monk experience program at Eiheiji Temple, I took a scenic journey to the Fukui Dinosaur Museum, located about 1.5 hours away. I boarded the Echizen Railway Katsuyama Eiheiji Line—a charming local train that felt like it came straight out of a cartoon. The ticket lady wore the sweetest, most beautiful uniform I’ve ever seen—like something out of an anime. It truly felt like I had stepped into a whimsical world.
The ride itself was peaceful and beautiful, offering stunning views of Fukui’s lush mountains and countryside. It’s the kind of journey that makes you slow down and enjoy the moment.
Once I arrived at the museum, I was relieved to find convenient lockers—perfect for storing my large backpack (just 100 yen, and it’s refundable!). That made it easy for me to walk around freely and explore.
I had a meal at the museum café. My set meal was okay, but if you’re visiting, I recommend going for the burger set—it looked much better than what I ordered!
Inside the museum, there’s a large souvenir area with tons of adorable items. I picked up a “queen dinosaur” figure for around 1,500 yen—definitely worth browsing if you love dino-themed gifts.
The highlight of my visit was the special exhibition section. It’s clear the museum put a lot of time and care into creating a rich and immersive experience. The sheer size of the dinosaur models is incredible—you can tell why this museum had to be built far from the city!
There was also a unique crystal and mineral exhibit inside, with great explanations that made the science behind the fossils and geology easy...
