Kiryū Meijikan — Attraction in Kiryu

A fine example of preserving and exhibiting a recognised national ICP (Important Cultural Property).

Originally built as a public hygiene centre and medical school for the region in Maebashi, the history-abundant prefectural capital of Gunma, in 1878. After relocated to the present site in early 1930’s, it had been used as Aioi village municipal office and later designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 1976. Now, it’s a museum of the district and the building itself. 5 minutes walk from Aioi Station. Not far from Watarase River, either.

Here, you can appreciate the well-preserved 150 year old Meiji-era “western-style” historical building with just $1 admission. The typical two-story western-style structure does never seem huge, but several different rooms with different functions. Great to learn the old times. 東武相老駅または上毛電鉄天王宿駅から歩いて5分強にある近代建築です。もとは前橋に群馬県衛生所兼医学校として建てられたものですが、昭和初期に相生村役場として現在の位置に移築されました。 小ぶりな建物ですが、細部を見ると瓦屋根に漆喰壁という和風な造りとベランダや柱、アーチ窓があるという洋風な造りが同居している和洋折衷の建築（いわゆる擬洋風建築）で、見ていてとても面白いです。 館内には、歴史資料の展示や明治時代にどのように使われていたかを再現している部屋などがありますが、じっくり見ても30分とはかからないかと思います。 また、喫茶室もあり、コーヒーとケーキなどが楽しめるようです。飲食では利用しませんでしたが、喫茶室に置かれているレコードを実際に聞かせてもらえました。どのような仕組みなのかを説明してもらいながら、初めてのレコードの音を楽しめました。 明治の雰囲気を味わえる貴重な建物です。桐生市中心部から少し足を伸ばしてみ...
