It's a fun walk around some amazing rock features caused by erosion. A pair of good hiking boots is recommended, sneakers should be fine too. We did the whole trip starting from the East Entrance (in Onigajo Center where we parked our car) and ended in West Entrance, and we had to walk around the dotted line in the map pictured below to get back to East Entrance. (Please don't trust Google Map and just follow this map. Google Map told us to walk through a car only tunnel!)
We walked VERY slowly, often stopped to admire the view, the rock features and take many many pictures, and we finished the whole thing in 2 hours.
It's nothing too challenging, but it's not a walk in the park either. Most of the path have railings so it doesn't feel particularly dangerous as an adult, but if you bring children esp small children, it's probably a good idea not to proceed further than Sanjojiki, unless your children are very well behaved and are used to these kind of environments.
Also a note for people that wishes to go to the top of the hills for the 鬼の見晴台, it is reached through a seperate path started a little bit before the East Entrance (also can refer to the map). It is not accessible while doing...
Read moreKumano city has several UNESCO world heritage sites and this is one of them. Walking along this cliff trail was definitely the highlight of my trip to Kumano city. The unique rock formations were incredibly beautiful. the trail is just a bit more than a kilometer (bit less than a mile) and is very easy to walk on. At many places you'll be right at the edge of the cliff and can see the sea waves crashing on the rocks below you. But there were sturdy handrails all along and it did not feel scary at all. A lot of photography opportunities, so I'd recommend spending 1 hour here and walking the whole trail. There are two exits - one from Onigajo cliff center (the main entrance) and the other one is the west gate located near the "Nishiguchi restaurant (鬼ヶ城西口)". Not many people use this exit and it was more like a forest trail at the start, but very soon it joins the paved roads. Before coming it's probably a good idea to check out the website if the trail is open or not. On certain holidays and bad weather days it can...
Read moreIf you are in the area, this is a place you cannot miss. The walk through experience is unforgettable (extra unforgettable if you are afraid of height lol).
There is no entrance fee, but it's a bit of walk/cycle to the entrance point, but it's definitely worth it.
We parked our bicycle at the East gate, so we had to walk back from the West gate to East gate again, hence took us around 1 5 hours in total. The walk through is around 40 minutes one way, and the "path" is on the cliff, so you get the stunning view of the sea on one side, and on the other side you could touch and feel the rocks, and admire the amazing work of nature.
We were there in September but it was still very hot, suggest to wear sunglasses and have sun protection if it's...
