潮岬観光タワーの隣の敷地に建つ、割と新しい建物です。 ジオパークとは、特徴のある自然遺産とそこにかかわる人の活動を保護活用しようという事業。 和歌山県では、紀伊半島南部の自然遺産をまとめて南紀熊野ジオパークとして登録しています。 具体的な自然遺産（ジオサイト）としては、那智の滝や串本の橋杭岩、白浜の千畳敷・三段峡・円月島などよく知られた場所を含む107か所が登録されているとのこと。 ここはいわばそのジオパークの総本山です。 館内では、こういった特徴ある地形を生み出す原因となった大地の活動について詳しく説明されています。 新しい施設だけに、床や立体模型の上に映像を映し出すプロジェクションマッピングとかいろいろ展示方法も工夫されていて楽しめます。 ただし内容はかなり専門的なものも含み、「泥ダイアピル」とか「前弧海盆堆積体」などの聞きなれない言葉も飛び出します。 それでも図解入りで詳しく説明されているので、イメージくらいはつかめるでしょう。 和歌山県に特徴的な多くの自然遺産について、その成り立ちを詳しく知ることができます。 私はこのセンターで、串本の橋杭岩がどのようにしてできたのか？　を勉強してから実際に橋杭岩を見に行きました。おかげで、あの特徴的な岩峰の眺めをより楽しむことができたと思います。 単に自然遺産の説明だけでなく、その場所と人々とのかかわり、あるいは南海トラフ巨大地震の被害予想なども説明されています。 無料で気軽に立ち寄れますし、常駐している説明員の方が詳しく説明してくれますので、潮岬観光の際にはぜひ一度足をお運びください。

This place is free and very educational for both adults and kids. The staff could speak and explain things in English and they have real experimental demonstrations of how magma forms molten rocks. It was a pleasant...
