式内社（名神大社）で、旧社格は国幣大社。 三重県では伊勢神宮・二見興玉神社・椿大神社に次いで4番目に参拝者数の多い神社であるとの事です。

資料によると、 社伝では、雄略天皇の御代の創建と伝える。古代には、社殿背後の多度山を神体山としていた。763年（天平宝字7年）、僧・万願によって神宮寺が創建された。863年（貞観3年）、神階が正二位に累進した。延喜式神名帳では名神大社に列し、伊勢国二宮として崇敬された。神宮寺は伊勢国の准国分寺とされた。平安後期には伊勢平氏により崇敬され、軍神としても信仰された。

中世には国司・北畠氏が保護していたが、1571年（元亀2年）、織田信長の長島一向一揆平定の際に、命を受けた大垣城主氏家卜全により、多度大社の本宮並びに摂末社、神宝、古記録、多度大社の神宮寺であった宝雲寺（真言宗）の七十余りに及ぶである堂塔伽藍が全て焼きつくされ焼失した。その後1605年（慶長10年）に桑名藩主・本多忠勝により再建された。 とあります。

良くCMやニュースで見てましたが、コロナ禍で、近場に目を向けていたところでこの度周辺を散策。駐車場は無料も有料もありますが、距離は大差ありません。要は無料に気づくかどうかです。ただ、有料が一番近いが、そこは休日200円、平日無料です。駐車場の整備もあるのにそのお値段は人良すぎでしょ。周辺は田舎の門前町で家も少なめ。お土産屋さんも４店舗ほどの控えめな観光地です。ご飯お土産屋さんで食べましたがランチ650円とかもあり、リーズナブル。観光地で普通なら900円くらいでも安い方。何て謙虚な地域性。そして、多度大社も川沿いという珍しい立地で、若干涼しい。まず入り口の階段の広さと馬の駆け上がる坂道が入り口階段横に整備されています。何とバイクや自転車は門前に駐輪スペースが作られています。何と心の広い神様なのだろう。誰ぞ曰く、お願いを何個しても怒らない優しい神様だとか。この坂道を馬が駆け上がるのかと想いを馳せながらも階段を登り、すぐ左には白馬に100円でニンジンをあげれる場所があります。こんな神社はじめてみましたね。馬のエサ箱にニンジンを投げ込みます。ニンジン嫌いの子供に見せてやりたいたべっぷり。車の祈祷も出きるみたいです。さらに進むと立派な休憩場所や綺麗な小川、各社殿があり。一番奥には滝もあります。お休みなのに人も少なく、かなり穴場の観光地でした。思うに人が良すぎる上に、アピール不足なのでしょうね。おちょぼ稲荷を見てると差がすごい(笑)おみやげ物もこれと言ったものはないですが、近くには鰻屋さんや多度峡プール、各種ランチスポット、神馬の湯など、寄り道スポットがありますので、多度大社と合わせて行くのがお勧めですね。静かな場所で、ドライブ好きなカップルにも意外と向いてると思います。多度大社でのみ買えるやかも...
