The "Tower of Peace" in Miyazaki, Japan, is controversial because it was originally built to commemorate the 2600th anniversary of the Japanese Empire, which is seen by many as a celebration of a militaristic past, and while now presented as a symbol of peace, some argue that its historical context is not adequately acknowledged, raising concerns about potential revisionism and a lack of transparency regarding its origins.

Key points about the controversy: Historical link to militarism:
The tower was constructed during a time when the slogan "Hakko Ichiu" (Eight corners under one roof), which promoted Japanese imperial expansion, was prevalent, making its association with peace appear disingenuous to some. Lack of clear explanation:
Critics argue that the tower's history and original intent are not adequately explained to visitors, potentially minimizing the severity of Japan's wartime actions. Local activism:
Residents of Miyazaki have actively pushed for a more transparent interpretation of the tower's history, sometimes clashing with park management over explanatory plaques. Some people consider the lack of documentation regarding the militaristic genesis of the tower to subtract from the structure's re-imagined power as a symbol for peace. Other survivors of the period have stated that the tower allows the horrors of war to be passed down through...

This tower is nothing but a symbol of Japan's nazism in WWII, a proof of genocide again innocent people and children in China and should be condemned. The bricks were looted all over China by the Japanese army during WWII. Unfortunately this inhumane odious and a barbaric act is not known by the world. But we should never stop uncovering history and the truth that this tower is nothing relate to peace but the opposite. How ironic. Japan should be ashamed for covering history with lies, and should apologize to all the victims they brutally slaughtered during WWII now!!...

This tower is a symbol of imperialism. The stones below were looted from all over China by the Japanese invaders during World War II. They are all cultural relics of great historical significance. I strongly condemn the existence of this tower. If Japan is a peace-loving country now, this tower should not be allowed to exist, instead of just renaming it the Tower of Peace. I'm afraid many of you know that it was originally called the Hakkon...

Only had a few minutes so we didn’t get to explore, but it was a really beautiful place to see in person. It’s also nice to take photos of the place as well as do a pictorial with the the tower as a background. There’s a spot where you can stand on the stone and hear a reverberating sound. Don’t miss it. It’s right in front of the tower.

Very impressive structure in the park, and you can stand on a stone in front of it and clap and hear the reflection of sound off the tower. You can climb up the stairs and then go around the back to go to a balcony overlooking the garden. Very cool, would definitely recommend
