Perhaps the most scenic shrine in Japan with stunning views. The only surprise was the traffic congestion. I drove around the region in a rented car but this was the only place during my trip where it took me a good 30 minutes just to enter the parking lot perhaps due to the fact that it was a holiday plus the good weather. Also, the route to the shrine is pretty narrow in places and I wouldn't recommend it to nervous drivers. For the best photos, I recommend going in the AM on a clear weather day. The sea Blue and Red gates of the shrine can give you some stunning photos. You can go directly to the small shrine but the correct way to go up is after passing through the 100 Red gates. There is a box high up on the final gate in which you throw coins and make a wish. Most people fail and there is someone from the Shrine to collect the coins. Quite far from most major cities of Japan but worth a visit for the views.
