The Nakasendo ("Central Mountain Route") was one of five Edo-period routes connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. Unlike Tokaido, it ran through the mountains and had 69 post towns. Today, several well-preserved sections exist, especially between Magome and Tsumago.
Attractions on the 12 km trail between Magome and Nagiso: 👉 Magome-juku: beautifully restored post town with traditional wooden houses and cobbled streets. 👉 Tsumago-juku: another preserved post town known for strict historical preservation rules. 👉 Scenic trail: 12 km walk with forest paths, small waterfalls, bamboo groves, and tea houses (like Tateba Chaya). 👉 Odaki and Medaki waterfalls: located along the trail. 👉Nagiso: access point to Tsumago and home to the Nagiso Town Museum and Tsumago Castle ruins trail.
To avoid crowds on the trail between Magome and Nagiso, it’s best to start early in the morning. For various reasons, we couldn't and began around 11 a.m. There were quite a few groups in the forest, but it was still manageable. A trekking pole is useful, but the hike is perfectly doable...

The falls are still accessible however. Also, as we did the section from Magome to Tsumago, the buses to and from the stations are quite packed.
