Visiting the Nakijin Castle Ruins was like stepping back in time. Perched on a hill in the northern part of Okinawa, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers not only a glimpse into Ryukyu history but also some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and sea.
We arrived on a sunny morning and were immediately captivated by the expansive stone walls — rugged yet majestic, winding across the hillside like a fortress from another world. Walking along the ancient pathways, we could feel the energy of a bygone era. The ruins are beautifully preserved, and though there’s not much of the original wooden structures left, the foundations and stonework speak volumes.
The atmosphere here is peaceful and spiritual. It’s easy to understand why this was once a sacred and strategic site. From the higher vantage points, we were rewarded with sweeping views of the East China Sea, lush greenery, and the remnants of the castle layout.
There are helpful signboards with historical information, and the walk is manageable for most, though those with mobility issues might find some parts challenging due to uneven stone paths.
Overall, Nakijin Castle Ruins was a highlight of our Okinawa trip — a perfect combination of culture, nature, and...
Read moreVisited here in early January , not peak time to visit Okinawa but i really wanted to see some Cherry Blossoms and this was my best bet. i was staying in Okinawa so had to take a bus up to the castle. if you are in Okinawa without a car then the Yanbaru Express Bus will get you from Naha to the bottom of the hill where the remains are, make sure you check the bus times as it's not very frequent and to plan a visit without too many delays it's best to have the times. when i visited there was a shuttle bust that will take you up the hill close to the entry to the remains but i'm not sure if it is always there or just during cherry blossom season. there isn't much left of the castle but the view from the top of the hill is really impressive and when the Cherry blossom is in full bloom it's a great place to visit, not sure i would recommend it in off season but if you are in the area i think it's still...
Read moreI took bus #66 from Nago Bus Terminal at station 2, the ride cost me 790¥. You’ll know you’re at the right stop because an English translation will inform you of the stop. Bus #66 travels in a counterclockwise direction. You can also take bus #65 as well.
The castle ruins itself didn’t take too long to check out, maybe half an hour for me. But it takes around 15 minutes to walk there from the bus stop but there is a nice naturey detour that you can take on the way.
After the castle, you can check out the nearby beach when returning to the bus stop. You can continue your journey with bus #66 but I took bus #65 in the opposite direction to go back to the terminal. I’m sure you don’t have to leave from and return to the terminal but that’s the easiest route if you don’t want to hunt and peck for your bus stops.
I’ve left the timetables for the bus stops near the castle for your...
