博物館だが、名前が帯広の100年を記念するというだけあり、現在の帯広に至るまでの開拓の歴史やそこにまつわる人の営みが凝縮したタイムカプセルのようだ。なにせ建物も展示物も年季が入り、現代の話も古代も等しく昔話のように並んでいて強烈だ。 大英博物館が収蔵する膨大なコレクションの中から100の展示物を選び人類の歴史を描いた展覧会が日本でも巡回したが、その中で日本に関するものの一つに、世界最古のスープを作った証明可能な壺がある。縄文式土器の壺に魚介のDNAが見つかったことから、今のところ最古とされているが、大英博物館収蔵品より古いのではないかという新聞記事があった。それもそのはず、十勝は黒曜石の産地で、おびただしい数の展示が並ぶ。 そして依田勉三率いる晩成社は、今や六花亭の菓子の名に「ひとつ鍋」や「マルセイ」バターサンドとして顕彰されているが、ここで学べるのは当時、帯広や十勝の主要産業のほとんどを手掛けてはその時は事業として失敗という結論になるものの、その後続く開拓者の第一歩になったことが展示されている。
