I really wanted to like the place, so I feel bad for leaving this comment, but… Avoid the place. Really, just don’t come here at all. I came slightly too early for the best colors of autumn, but the view IS still nice. However, that’s about it. This is not worth wasting HOURS of your time. Since MOST of the trail is closed, and apparently has been for a long time, will be for a long time, there is really nothing interesting to do here. Only a picture to take (10 min walk to go under the bridge). Even worse, you’ll probably never get the sought-after picture of a train coming by the tunnel, because there are so few of them during the day. I can’t tell about the town of Nakayamadaira Onsen, but Naruko Onsen is clearly a dying place. Barely anything of interest is open during the week. The seasonal bus route was never updated and still stops at Narukoyo Narukoguchi despite the trail being closed here, and most stops are at places with literally nothing to do or see. And if, like me, you came here at about 10:05 by train, you’ll be back to the station by 11:50, presented with the choice of either waiting for the next train at 12:31 or trying to go to one of the famous onsen and then be trapped here for another 2 hours with nothing at all to do. (Next train at 14:16) I walked around the town a bit up to one of the main attractions, taki no yu, and it seemed to be undergoing some heavy renovations. (It might still have been open but this is not very inviting, and I chose to leave the town ASAP) Anyway, I don’t know if the area is in such a state because of the coronavirus, because of a lack of money, or for political reasons, but, the place is terrible. If you do consider coming here, do it by car, as you will have the liberty of escaping whenever and wherever you want. Also, that way, you’ll be able to come at the right time to see one of the rare trains come through the tunnel. And don’t come before very late October. I came here on 19/10 and it was still too early (see the...
Read moreWe came here on November 7th and the autumn colours were still amazing. We took the train from Sendai to the nearest station, Nakayamadaira and walked to the gorge. The walk itself was about 20mins along the main road (not the most pleasant walk) but the Gorge itself was amazing.
The train ride between Naruko Onsen station and Nakayamadiara Onsen station was amazing. The train driver would stop the engine and let the train drift through the two tunnels at Naruko Gorge, and it was as it you entered the wonderland of Momiji. Simply breath-taking. There are quite a few tourists that would just take the 7 mins train ride in between the two stations back and forth for that few seconds of Momiji wonderland.
If you are travelling by train, do take note that the train schedule is infrequent, so make sure you time your...
Read moreThe Scenery is very nice we went during summer completely covered with greenery but the best time to visit here is during Autumn for the colorful view of the bridge and also the rail way track view from the bridge. We can go to this place from Naruko Onsen Station operated by JR rail ways but the frequency of trains from Furukawa station to Naruko Onsen is less almost one train in every hour or so.From Naruko Onsen Station we can get to Naruko George by Cab and it may cost around 1500 Yen to 2000 Yen and it will take almost 10 to 15 minutes to reach.Naruko George is around 4KM away from the Naruko Onsen Station. If we need any information we can know from the tourist information Center in both Furukawa Station and also at Naruko...
