大湯沼と言えば登別温泉が有名だが、蘭越町にもあるのだ！ 名称にニセコと付くが、蘭越町もニセコ地域の一角なんです。 登別と同じく高温の硫黄泉が湧き、ミルキーブルーを見ることができます。周囲は車で通るだけで、窓を閉めていても硫黄の香りがするほど強烈。

日本全国硫黄泉が湧いて沼になっているところはちらほらあるが、ここまで雪が降る場所はそうありません。そのため、冬期間は駐車場から降りられません。 ゴールデンウィークに訪れたときも雪がかなり残っていました。

夏になればさすがに降りることができます。周囲は森林で雰囲気は良いです。ただし、硫化水素には注意しましょう。

ここの源泉は隣にある蘭越町交流促進センター雪秩父でも使われています。 なお、雪秩父の温泉分析書を見る限り、強酸性をもたらす水素イオンは少なく、主成分は遊離二酸化炭素となっています。
