To our party of four, this was the highlight of our trip to Sado. That said, I think we appreciated it more because we took a tour of the island the day before which helped give us context on all the references the works alluded to.
Another review said this was a good way to spend a half an hour, but we didn't think a half hour did this museum justice. There was so much detail and reference worth studying and appreciating.
This former courthouse converted to museum held half a dozen rooms of various sizes and the connecting halls covered in block prints ranging from traditional folk art to modernist styles and everything in-between.
No photography is allowed, but we clarified with the attendant that using our phones to translate was alright and she was fine with that.
Many prints were available for sale both framed and not, though not every print was (including some of our favorites). I'd highly recommend paying close attention to the mostly black prints with stunning detail and variety perspectives. The mural was also a particularly interesting homage to the island containing lots of varied references to the island and its history.
This local gem may not the the best advertised, but it is absolutely worth the trip. Enjoy slowly...
