Saijo Archaeological History Museum (西条市考古歴史館) is located on the mountainside of 八堂山 (Hachidozan), known for its rare late Yayoi period high-altitude settlement ruins. The museum opened in May 1991 as a center for archaeological and historical studies. The unique building, modeled after a Yayoi-style dwelling, features distinctive cross-shaped roof decorations called 千木 (chigi) and reliefs depicting Yayoi period life on its exterior walls.

From the balcony, which also serves as an observatory, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the city, 道前平野 (Dozen Plain), and 瀬戸内海 (Seto Inland Sea). On clear days, the islands along the "Shimanami Kaido" are visible. The museum is illuminated at night, creating a fantastical sight on the mountainside.

Inside, the museum exhibits valuable artifacts and materials from 八堂山遺跡 (Hachidozan Ruins) and other sites in the city. There are also sections recreating Yayoi period lifestyles, a hands-on corner for making fire with wooden sticks, a video corner detailing events in Saijo, and exhibition spaces for local creative works.

Approximately 220 meters along the mountain path from the museum, the summit of 八堂山 (Hachidozan) features reconstructed pit dwellings and elevated circular storage buildings. The surrounding area is developed as "Citizen's Forest," with nature trails, an adventure plaza for children with athletic equipment and playgrounds, and a "梅林園" (Plum Grove) where around 1,000 plum trees bloom from February to March. From late March, about 1,100 cherry trees turn the area pink, and azalea flowers can be enjoyed around May. The area provides a relaxing space for citizens throughout the year, with spring greenery and...
