We came to Matsunoyu for a morning bath and lunch during the New Year holiday in December 2024.
Entry is only 800円. It is one of the few baths in the Jozankei area that does not restrict the use of its baths to non-staying guests during the holiday period. They are not explicitly tattoo friendly or unfriendly, but my friend with a couple small tattoos had no issues.
It is about a 15-minute bus ride from Jozankei and right next to the Ainu Culture Promotion Center which was unfortunately closed as we came on a Monday.
There is no sign saying 男 or 女, only ゆ, so mind the colour of the banner: blue for men, red for women. There are small coin lockers for valuables in the hallway to the women’s side, but there are only baskets in the changeroom.
The showers provide shampoo and body wash. There is one indoor bath and one outdoor bath. I recommend coming during the day so you can enjoy the view of the river, mountain, and hear birdsong from the outdoor bath.
I also recommend their restaurant, which is affordable and has many delicious and copious meals to choose from. I loved their jingisukan set meal, and my husband enjoyed their mountain vegetable soba. We also tried their sake, it is not too dry or sweet, just very easy to drink. I’d love to come back...

This shallow idea changes completely the moment you go out to the open-air bath. You can enjoy the flow of the Toyohira River, the sheer rock surface, the contrast between yellow and red of the autumn leaves, the cold air of early winter, and the superb view slowly without being too hot. I really want U to try the open-air bath at this...
Read moreWhat an experience we had here, they had outdoor onsen that looked into a mountain, we came during winter and was lucky to get a wonderful view of the white mountain under the snow while in the hot bath, it was so beautiful, we felt like we’re part of the nature.
The staff was friendly and answered all of our questions patiently. The facility is a bit old but very clean. Price was very affordable, 800 yen for entry ticket for adults, unlimited time. Just a short drive from Central Sapporo (40 mins). We will...
