Kawanoehachiman Shrine — Attraction in Shikokuchuo

Kawanoe Hachiman Shrine is the chief guardian shrine of Yamada-go in Uwa District. According to the shrine's tradition, its founding dates back to the 6th year of Empress Suiko's reign (598), when a branch spirit of Usa Hachiman-gu was enshrined in Kiriyama (also known as Misty Mountain) in Kinsei-cho, Yamatai, Shikokuchuo City, a place known for its legends of the Heike clan's fallen warriors. Before the Edo period, the shrine was called Sho Hachiman-gu, with its temple being the Daiokayama Henjoin Hosshakuji of the Shingon sect. During the autumn festival, 12 Taiko drums and a ship are offered, with the festival also known as Kawanoe Autumn Festival. 2023-06-23 川之江地区では、この八幡神社、金生八幡宮、上分神社が三大神社と思う。本日この三社を廻った感想ではその中でも、八幡神社が規模、厳かさ、周辺景色の美しさの点で素晴らしい。 ただ本殿と拝殿の周辺にスペースが無くて木々が迫っていて全体を俯瞰できないのは残念だった。多分何十回も脇を通りながら、中に入ったのは本日が初めてであっただけに空白であったものをちゃんと埋めた感じで感慨深い。

以下は愛媛県神社庁ホームページより。 推古天皇６年（598）に豊前国宇佐本宮より御分霊を勧請したという。当初は旧川之江市金生町山田井切山に鎮座していた。その後、後冷泉天皇の康平年間（1058～1064）に伊予守源頼義が川之江町畠山に社殿を造営し、治暦元年（1065）8月13日に奉遷した。『予章記』に「頼義御務メ之時、彼ノ命二依リ、八箇所ニ八幡宮ヲ建立ス」と記述のある伊予国八箇所の八幡社の一社であるとされる。奉遷の際、頼義より幣帛、神饌、太刀、弓箭等の献納があった。天正10年（1582）に長曽我部元親の手によって社殿が焼かれ、寛永３年（1626）に社殿を再興したが、正保３年（1646）12月に再び社殿が焼失し、旧記、宝物等の大半を失った。その後、慶安元年（1648）に水利の便の悪い畠山から現在の亀嶋に社殿を新築した。その際、足仲彦天皇、気長足姫命を勧請合祀したという。歴代の領主の崇敬厚く、戦国時代の川之江城（仏殿城）主河上但馬守は畑三百石の寄進を行い、江戸初期の川之江藩主一柳美作守も篤く崇敬した。土佐藩13代山内豊熙は参覲交代の海上安全を祈念して一対の石燈籠を寄進した。嘉永４年（1851）に社殿が三度目の火災に遭い、村民協力し辛苦の末、８ヶ月を要して安政５年（1858）３月２日社殿を再興、遷座した。明治５年（1872）郷社となり、同13年（1880）11月県社に列格する。昭和60年（1985）、本殿屋根の葺き替え等の改修...
