Before I talk about the ropeway and Mt Usu, be aware that this is a tourist hotspot. Even in the low season, the car parks - which are huge - are crowded with cars and tour buses. Parking ¥500 yen cash only. The area around the ropeway terminal is full of souvenir shops and cafes. It's hectic. We didn't have to wait in line for a ticket, though, maybe because it was around lunchtime. The trip up is quite short, and the great view from the gondola is only a taste of what's to come! The views, even from the ropeway level, are fantastic. The Mt Uzu Terrace has a small take-away drink and snack bar, and the terrace, with comfortable chairs where you can relax and take in the view, is great. If you just decide to stop here, it's already a worthwhile experience. But you can also walk up "600 stairs," as the commentary tells you, to a wider view. It's really worth the climb!! You don't need special shoes but it could get cold. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Muroran and the Hakucho Bridge. Uchiura Bay is directly below, with the Hakodate peninsular stretching out on your right into the Pacific. It's quite a vista. The geological history of these mountains is on full display, making recent geology come to life, with fumaroles steaming away behind you. It's not quite Mt Asahidake, but an active volcano is always impressive. Of course, many of these experiences depend greatly on the weather. Choose your day, or half-day, it doesn't need to take more than about 2 hours, and it's well worth it.

Adult fare : ¥ 1,600 Kids 6 years and up : ¥ 800 To go here, if you're from JR Toya Muroran: Take Donan Bus to Toyako Onsen (15 minutes) At Toyako Onsen, take Taxi, cost ¥ 2,000 and about 10 minutes drive. Bus from Toyako Onsen to Usuzan only available from end April to end October. Starting November until April, bus is not operated. The view from up here is stunning. Breathtaking. The picture just don't do enough justice. Once you go up, apart from the picturesque view, there will be hiking trails where you can see larger crater. The walking trail is closed from November to April. Still you can see the crater's smoke. Beautiful! There was also souvenir shop, waiting area with seating and toilets up here. What makes our visit more interesting was there was video sharing about the history of Usuzan and volcanoes nearby including Nakajima Island and Lake Toya itself. It helped us appreciate more about the nature. After the visit, we go down and found a room that offer us to feel a little bit about how it feels during Usuzan eruption. This place is great with toddlers. We brought 4 kids - 6 months baby, 3 years old, 5 years old, 7+ years old. Our kids love the hiking part where there were also hiking stick for free available at the beginning of the track. It is made from wood.

I visited this beautiful place yesterday and I must say that it was truly magnificent, I’ve seen many places in Japan that have breath taking views and this place is up there with the best of them, in all fairness the views and scenery in Japan are all truly unique. When you first arrive you see this beautiful green area at the bottom of one of the mounts, there’s a big car park which will cost 500yen, you then make your way up to the cable car booking office and purchase your tickets at 750yen each then it’s climb aboard for the trip to the top. The further you climb the better the views, once at the top there’s a very big viewing platform and an area where you can maybe enjoy an ice cream whilst taking in the panoramic views. You then follow a trail that leads to another viewing area, be warned the steps up to the area are a tad bit gruelling-it took the wind out of my sails but when atop there are 270-degree views of the towns below, breath taking vistas on a beautiful clear day are second to none. I really hope that you take the opportunity to visit Mt Usu Ropeway Observatory I promise you that you’ll not be disappointed.

Beautiful views with the option to hike around the outer rim. You get lovely views coming out of the cable car, sit at the cafe to soak in said views. The cafe takes only cash. It gets really sunny, bring hats for sun protection. After the cable car station, there is are steps to hike up to the volcano’s rim. And then another hike to go around the outer rim. The pathway isn’t stroller friendly although we did see a couple carry up their baby stroller (10/10 effort). Payment for rope way tickets available via cash and credit card.

Mt.Usu Ropeway Recreational tramway providing rides to elevated views of Lake Tōya & Mount Usu's volcanic crater. Breathtaking mountain/ lake toys / volcano view. A 40-minute/70-minute drive (with toll/without toll) from Noboribetsu is a famous caldera, Lake Toya. The best view of the caldera is from the top of Mount Usu via the Usuzan Ropeway (¥1600) which leaves every 15 minutes. ¥500 for Parking. Though, it’s really only worth the trip if the weather is sunny. If it’s cloudy, give it a miss.

This is my second visit to the mountain because on my first visit, I could only stay there for about five minutes before I had to go back to the tour bus. On my second visit, I could be more relaxed and take my time to explore the area. As I was up in the mountain, I took the time to breathe in fresh air and enjoy the peace and quiet. There is a long flight of stairs to go up to the observatory and get back. So, if you do not have the physical stamina, please stay near the cable car station.
