Before I talk about the ropeway and Mt Usu, be aware that this is a tourist hotspot. Even in the low season, the car parks - which are huge - are crowded with cars and tour buses. Parking ¥500 yen cash only. The area around the ropeway terminal is full of souvenir shops and cafes. It's hectic. We didn't have to wait in line for a ticket, though, maybe because it was around lunchtime. The trip up is quite short, and the great view from the gondola is only a taste of what's to come! The views, even from the ropeway level, are fantastic. The Mt Uzu Terrace has a small take-away drink and snack bar, and the terrace, with comfortable chairs where you can relax and take in the view, is great. If you just decide to stop here, it's already a worthwhile experience. But you can also walk up "600 stairs," as the commentary tells you, to a wider view. It's really worth the climb!! You don't need special shoes but it could get cold. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Muroran and the Hakucho Bridge. Uchiura Bay is directly below, with the Hakodate peninsular stretching out on your right into the Pacific. It's quite a vista. The geological history of these mountains is on full display, making recent geology come to life, with fumaroles steaming away behind you. It's not quite Mt Asahidake, but an active volcano is always impressive. Of course, many of these experiences depend greatly on the weather. Choose your day, or half-day, it doesn't need to take more than about 2 hours, and it's...

To go here, if you're from JR Toya Muroran: Take Donan Bus to Toyako Onsen (15 minutes)
At Toyako Onsen, take Taxi, cost ¥ 2,000 and about 10 minutes drive. Bus from Toyako Onsen to Usuzan only available from end April to end October.
Starting November until April, bus is not operated.
The view from up here is stunning. Breathtaking.
The picture just don't do enough justice.
Once you go up, apart from the picturesque view, there will be hiking trails where you can see larger crater. The walking trail is closed from November to April.
Still you can see the crater's smoke. Beautiful!
There was also souvenir shop, waiting area with seating and toilets up here.
What makes our visit more interesting was there was video sharing about the history of Usuzan and volcanoes nearby including Nakajima Island and Lake Toya itself.
It helped us appreciate more about the nature.
After the visit, we go down and found a room that offer us to feel a little bit about how it feels during Usuzan eruption.
This place is great with toddlers. We brought 4 kids - 6 months baby, 3 years old, 5 years old, 7+ years old.
Our kids love the hiking part where there were also hiking stick for free available at the beginning of the track. It is...

I recently had the opportunity to visit Mount Usu and take the Usuzan Ropeway, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! As I ascended the mountain in the cable car, I was blown away by the breathtaking views of Lake Toya and the surrounding landscape. The scenery was simply stunning, with lush green forests and crystal-clear waters stretching out as far as the eye could see.
When I reached the summit, I was struck by the unique geological features of the mountain, including the volcanic crater and lava flows. And on a clear day like the one I visited, the views from the top were truly panoramic - I could even see the Sea of Japan!
Overall, I would highly recommend the Usuzan Ropeway and Mount Usu to anyone visiting Hokkaido. The experience was both exhilarating and serene, and the natural beauty of the area is truly awe-inspiring. Whether you're a nature lover, a photographer, or simply looking for a unique experience, this is definitely a must-see destination!
And there is also vegan food there at the restaurant in the rope way station, I’ve put a review there and go check it out now and follow this account for more...
