This was the toughest walk I did in Hokkaido. I don't know how many stairs I climbed on my return from the south tip of the crater but it felt like thousands. It is a hard walk and all estimates on how long you need to do the walk are accurate. But the views are incredible and the nature around there is very pretty too. The cost is reasonable for the cable car (ropeway) and for those not wanting to do any substantial walking, a viewing platform at the top of the cablecar (ropeway) does offer some good looks into the crater.
