Hikosan Jingu

This is the best high mountain shrine (former Shugendo temple) that I've seen in Japan. The original stairway to the top shrine is 4km long and more than 1200years old! This place is not known to foreign tourists but is more stunning than kumano kodo! Yamabushi monks perform fire rituals on the first Sunday of the month. The have actual documents related to Miyamoto Musashi that have recently been made available to see!! A very secretive place, the Yamabushi here were outlawed and the massive 3800 home community that once live on the mountain were force underground. Visit Hikosan Jingu while it's still off the map!
