その昔、大神の成隣小学校の脇を下っていく道と、対岸の平地域をつなぐ「平の渡し」があった。八王子の千人同心が日光東照宮の防火・警備の番のために通った日光街道の渡し。それ以前には徳川家康が小田原城落城の後、それより前に落城していた八王子城を視察したあと、この「平の渡し」を越えて川越に向かったといいます。さらにその前には、拝島の日吉神社に陣を張った武田信玄の一軍が、この渡しを越え、北条氏照が立て籠もる滝山城を攻めたということです。
