Small, yet charming museum retelling the history of the Suginami ward from archeological evidence from the Jomon period to postwar intellectuals writings and lifestyle. Two very engaging exhibits are the model Showa period apartment and the real, life-sized Japanese farm house (kominka) in the yard - through the two of these you can really see how life used to look like in different times, yet in the same place. If you don’t read Japanese it’s best to have a Japanese speaker/reader with you or use any other means to understand some of the explanations. It’s a shame the museum does not make this fascinating history more accessible to...

Small museum detailing the history of the Suginami area. Nice selection of old photographs, texts, art, models and mock-up housing. At 100 Yen its basically free entrance. 地域の郷土博物館って、タイムカプセルみたいで好きなんです。（ジジイってことデス） 1989年にオープンした杉並区立郷土博物館は、杉並の歴史と郷土資料の収集・保存、調査・研究と展示・公開を行っています。 案内板通りに進むと住宅街に見えてくるかやぶき屋根の長屋門が博物館の入り口。五日市街道沿いにあった江戸時代末期の建物で、長屋門とは下級武士の住宅だった長屋に門を付けたもの。農村部では一部の村役人層の家のみが建築を許可されていたそうです。 この時は昔の人が使った「ナツ」の「涼む・遊ぶ・暮らす」に関する「ナツ」かしいモノを展示・紹介する「すぎなみ夏日記　あの日見たナツモノたち」という企画展（2020年９月６日まで）が、行われていました。 子供用の蚊帳が今回のイチオシ！見るからに涼しげな金魚の絵とグラデーション。蠅帳ではありませんよ。かなりセンスがよく、使い道ないけれど、欲しくなっちゃう。 １階には企画展の行われていた特別展示室の他に、常設展示室があり杉並の原始・古代から中世、近世、近現代までを時代ごとに解説しています。（土器や石器、模型って必ずあるけど面白い） 敷地内には博物館の入り口にもなっている長屋門に加えて古民家があるのですが、順路に家事を手伝いながらも学ぶ理想の姿を見つけました。最近すっかり見かけなくなった二宮尊徳像。 郷土博物館のオープン時に移築された古民家が建てられたのは、1789年から1800年だそう。江戸時代、杉並区では杉が多く植林されており高井戸丸太として出荷されていたんですって。 内部には囲炉裏や土間、かまどなど、昔の農家の生活様式が再現されています。この日は大きな蚊帳が吊られていました。 古民家では昭和初期頃までの農家の行事を新暦で紹介する展示がほぼ毎月行われているそうです。
