The little town of Uchiko is a gem. It really seems to preserve the feel of small town life Japan from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is a wonderful Kabuki theatre. Little shops and restaurants. It does not feel commercial.

2024年(令和6年)8月15日現在、日本国内には国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区が129箇所指定されていますが、その中でも特に保存状態のいい地区の一つです。指定を受けた時期は全国で18番目の1982年(昭和57年)という比較的早い時期であったことからも裏付けられます。指定地区の範囲は、北端が古民家を再生したドイツ料理店「Zum schwarzen Keiler(ツム•シュヴァルツァン•カイラー)」から、南端がこちらも古民家を活用したゲストハウス「内子晴れ」までの「八日市」と呼ばれる範囲ですが、更に南に続く本町通り「六日市」地区にも貴重な歴史的建造物が点在しているので、観光スポットには事欠きません。昼間は混雑している街道沿いも、夕方や朝一番は殆ど観光客のいない状態で散歩できるので、この集落で一泊することをお薦めします。

I wanted to make a one day short stop in Uchiko. But due to this wonderful guest house I decided to extend one more night!

I'm currently in a one year around the world trip and I've visited many establishments. But so far I'd say it's my favorite one.

Staying here brang me a Ghibli movie feeling. The mansion is clean, relaxing, peaceful and heartwarming.

Staff-members are welcoming, friendly, smiley and are happy to help giving the good food or sightseeing adresses.

I wish I can come back here once I'll end my one year trip!
