Yakushima museum review:
Really cool museum, a nice hour spent there!
We had some time to kill before we left on our ferry back to the mainland and we took a trip to the museum. It only cost 600 yen for adults and 400 for students. There were beautiful displays of preserved parts of trees, information on the landscape and geology of the island, a display of the lodging industry, including the tools used beneficial characteristics of yakushima cedar, a compilation of beautiful photographs taken around the island by locals and visitors, and a section for their fishing industry! There were also some fun things to do for children and cool souvenirs!
Definitely recommend a visit if you have some time left after finishing hiking...

The museum has a lovely atmosphere the entire interior appears to be done in cedar tiling. Several interactive pieces and videos showing the history of Yakushima's wood + a temporary exhibition hall (there was a photography contest for next year's calendar when I went). Small gift shop with books, postcards and wooden goods.

Read moreIt's a really good place to learn about Yakusugi & Yakushima's history. There are a lot of old loggers' tools, and amazing cedar art. Pamphlets are available in English for the ones who doesn't speak Japanese. However, it doesn't explain everything that is written in English but the main ideas.
